This is an odd one but would be really useful to me. I would like to open and view a program that is being recorded by another program while it is actively being recorded. If I try to open a file like this through VA or recordings, I get an error message. I know you can do this for shows that GBPVR is recording, but I can't do it for shows recorded by another program out on my network.

I can open the in-process show with VLC so I expect it can be done. I know I can set up a UBU and External recorder combination but this seems like the long way around to get to where I want to go. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming the app has allowed 'shared read' sharing attribute when it created the file, then it should be able to play them. I'm not sure how I could do this if this sharing hadnt been specified (ie, GB-PVR would be unable to open the file, or read any data from it).

The file is being produced by MyTheatre. This is a work around for problems we discussed earlier. I am looking at changing hardware, but I can't right now. The odd thing is I can view the in-process file in VLC but not in GBPVR or WMP. I just get a file in use error. Any idea what VLC is doing?

No I dont. If GB-PVR can physically open the file and read any data in it, then it'll be able to play it.

Rats. I will continue my quest to get it to the MVP another way. Thanks for your help. Any other way to get a stream into GBPVR and on to the MVP besides UBU/External recorder?

Welcome back! I hope you and the family had a great time. Traveling with the little ones can be a challenge. They need so much stuff it seems sometimes you end up being more of a Sherpa than anything at that age.Smile

you should not compare VLC with any other usual media player Big Grin
it's the most stable player out there, whatever i've thrown at it that even barely had resemblances to video files, it has played them back (even only minimal portions of in progress downloads via p2p). why? dunno, i guess they really try it the hard way & ignore some corrupt data in the stream that i.e. Media Player would just throw an error back & quit.
most likely: Media Player & GBPVR (via DirectVideo) read a video file & check them if complete (i assume that GBPVRParser is only jumping in for playback if the recording is made by GBPVR) & only if the video file is ok playback is started.

No, its used if it cant get an exclusive lock on the file. It wouldnt be able to get an exclusive lock on any file still recording.
