Is it possible to pause the recording while still viewing the live stream - like with a VCR? If not, can it be made possible? (Basically, the only feature my old man wants Smile )

Apologies if this question has been asked/answered - couldn't find the thread.

I dont really understand what you want, but disabling live preview mode may give you something like it. It will always be buffering, so you can always pause/rw/ff.

Basically, at the moment, if you press Pause while recording, it stops the image but keeps recording.

My dad wants it the other way around, so that you can pause the recording but continue to watch live tv - so you dont have to record ad's. (I'm aware comskip is available Smile )

I don't think what you're saying is possible, but with the use of comskip and comcut you could achieve commercial free recordings.

No Prob - just thought I'd ask Smile

I'm guessing this has something to do with the way the filters are connected?

That is just not the way I'd intended things to work. I could have done that, but went a different direction instead.

We discussed this a long time ago over at SHSPVR.com and the problem is with hardware encoders. It takes several seconds to initialize (and stop) the hardware. While you might be able to start and stop a digital broadcast transport stream quicker, the delay involved would lead to very poor startup. You would always lose a few seconds of the show at startup. (if you've noticed, you are normally viewing with a small time delay from actual broadcast transmission time.

Frankly, with the availability of cheap and easy native MPEG editing applications, not to mention the automatic commercial screeners, I see no value in this feature except familiarity for those used to tape recording. It requires the user to sit there and anticipate cut points, and is inherently less accurate than either editing or automatic processing.

I spent many years doing the old VHS pause button thing and would hate to go back to that technique.

It brings back memories though. With a little cassette-recorder recording those 2 songs from the top 40/100 (whatever).Smile
