I have seen a few cases on the market that have 7" LCD screens built into the case. Also a few custom cases where people have built them into cases.
What purpose could the lcd screen serve with an application such as GBPVR? I have an extra 8" screen laying around that I could put to some use, but I'm just not sure how useful it would actually be.

I would enjoy hearing some suggestions about what could the LCD could get put to use for.

Can't wait to hear some suggestions,

Carlito

I have a 5 inch screen. It is a bit small so I am adapting the blue skin to have larger fonts so that it is readable :-)

Why? Well, it means I can see what GB-PVR is doing without having to switch on the television and I don't have to switch the tv over if I am/better half is watching something just to see "did I start that recording, what song is playing, ..." Others probably use their screen to monitor temperature or music titles, etc. For those that like case modding -- it just looks impressive and is simply fun to do.

I was looking at these screens.

Not too pricy if you consider $150 is worth it for a 3.5" lcd.
You'd probably also need a second cheap TV-out card that could handle the non-standard resolutions of these tiny monitors.

Hi,

As I said above, the 5" screen I have is pretty small -- when you're using the standard blue interface, you'll not be able to read the text if you're not fairly close (a few feet). A 7", 8" or even 10" screen would be a big help -- at the right price (my PSOne screen cost around 50 Euro -- but that was ages ago!). I connected it and the TV set to the TV out on my Pundit using a y-cable.

mvandere Wrote:... My latest thoughts were along the lines of a 'Digital Picture frame' with a USB interface. You would dynamically generate 'pictures' and push them to the DPF which would just cycle through them, even when the PVR is off. Unfortunately the only DPF I've found here with USB did not work as advertised. Gotta wait till technology catches up with GB-PVR Big Grin

How would you go about that? don't the DPFs expect to have a "storage" (like a disk-on-key) connected to the USB (and so would your PC), so connecting them with a cable will not work.
Or, is there a "storage" that can be connected via USB to two devices (1TongueC 2Big GrinPF)? This, if existed would solve another problem I have... Smile

Thanks for all that info!

Well, in my case, I was not so much interested in DPF, but rather, I have one of those media-center in a box (basically, a clever DVD player + DivX/Xvid ability + WiFi/RJ45). It also has a front USB socket (like a PC), to connect USB memories for playing from them.
Now, it sits right by the GB-PVR, but it does much better job at image converting to HD (until I build a proper HTPC). So I thought maybe sometimes use it to play media that is stored on the GB-PVR machine (and not over the WiFi).

Both are "hosts", or PC-like (well, one is a PC for sure...). But if there was a way to fool them (or one of them) that the other is a storage device, or if there was a way to have an external storage that would be visible from both as a storage, then it could help.

Dont make yourself crazy, there are other ways for me to solve this. I just thought I missed something.

Hmmm..so basically what i'm gathering from this thread and others online, is that most people with a little lcd screen use it to show the same info that comes up on the main monitor.

Are there any other suggestions for what to display besides default content?
Are there any other suggestions for other projects where the little lcd might come in useful (or even just cool looking Wink)

What about using one of those USB to video adaptors?
You really just need to output pretty text to the screen & maybe some graphics.
Nothing that would over tax the bus.
Possibly a custom web-admin screen running in one of those opensource mini-web browsers.
