Can I stream my recordings in a non-local-networked environment?

I am under the impression that I need to have a local-area-network setup to be able to stream using gbpvr client-server setup.

I cannot create a LAN setup at home because the other computer is my work laptop which they do not allow (I do not know how they disbaled it) it to network in a home-style-network.

I can connect to my home router fine, and the bandwidth between the HTPC running gbpvr and my work laptop is very high (100mb cabling thru switch) so I do not have a bandwidth issue.
Expect I cannot create a LAN.

IS it necessary to have a LAN to be able to stream?

I read the wiki but it is not very clear to me yet.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Its only something I've ever tested on a LAN, so I cant really answer your question. It does require access to a file share with the GB-PVR database though, so you probably wont be able to do it the way you're suggesting. You might be able to rig up something with SSH tunnel or something similar - but this is well outside the support I can offer you.

It could possibly look into the stream offered in the web admin though. It might be adequate for your purposes.

I see.
I tried the webadmin 'Play' bottom, but it still tries to download the 'whole' file (just like you click download) which is very slow due to large files (basically, it is not streaming at all, but downloading).

Thanks for the reply, and I hope if someone can show me another way to stream (or maybe how to enable LAN options in my work laptop Smile )

I dont use web admin myself, but I'm fairly sure if you have VLC installed on your laptop then it should stream the video.

unless you have an admin account on your laptop then they've probably locked it down and you won't be able to change it.

As for streaming, have you installed vlc on your server and laptop? If not I would suggest you try that...

I see.
never know I needed VLC.
Will give it a shot when I get home.

oncerning the LAN issue, I do have admin rights on my laptop (as I install a lot of professional apps all the time ...etc.) but still cannot find ANYWHERE in my control panel or networking options how to setup a LAN Sad

I will try the VLC tonight, but hopefully someone can point out if it is possible to enable LAN in my laptop.

Thanks sub and Carlito for the help (I wish if the wiki was clear enough Smile ) with VLC. Will try it tonight.

Usually all you need to do in order to set up your lan is make sure all computers share the same Workgroup. If you can connect to you home router then I would assume this is possible.
Right clicking the my computer icon on your desktop and choosing Properties will bring up a properties window. If you click the 'Computer Name' tab you should see what your Workgroup is set to. They should all be the same if you want to share files across computers.

I see. Thanks a lot.
Will try it when I get home.

(I thought it was more complex than that, as the last time I setup a LAN, I needed to run some windows wizard that installed some stuff in my computer, then needed to install the same stuff in all other computers. This has been changed recently to a simpler method with only workgroup names??)

Ditto. If it's anything like how we lock down our laptops at work, all traffic goes through the corporate network. It's going to be very unlikely that you can access anything on your LAN except a connection to the Internet.
