Daylight savings time 2007

It seems that the start of daylight savings time in Canada and the US is changing. See http://inms-ienm.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/time_ser...ing_e.html or http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/b.html for details.

For computer programs, including GBPVR that already adjust for Daylight savings time, am I correct in assuming that the program will not be able to self-adapt to the change? If so, has anyone in the affected area figured out what to do about the 2 weeks in which Daylight savings time has started but the computer doesn't know it?

The DST info is held somewhere in the Windows system - can't remember where but I remember finding it somewhere when running NT years ago.

If MS have got their act together and you have Automatic Updates enabled then it should fix itself automatically.

Now I remember - TZEdit was a Resource Kit utility provided for NT.

I seem to remember in the early days of NT, MS got the BST/GMT changeover wrong when there were 5 weekends in October. I had to manually edit a bunch of NT servers because the changeover came a week early.

If you run xp sp2 there is a security patch that will come out this week to fix you, if you are running win 2000 you will need to run the tool since below sp2 is not supported.

Also there is a patch out for Java running products too.

The question is whether gbpvr stores the program guide and scheduled recordings in local time or UTC/GMT.

If the latter, then adjustments will need to be made to recordings scheduled during the changing DST periods (between March to April and October to November). Microsoft Outlook releases prior to the 2007 version suffer from this issue. Microsoft has issued a software utility (Time Zone Data Update Tool) to adjust appointments scheduled during these periods.

for USA users, just copy that .reg file from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914387 and run it and you're set...

you can double check with tzedit,look at bottom and see the start and end dates to make sure they're updated..run tzedit before to see current dates and after to see changes..

It stores times that it is given by the EPG source.

In my case, for example, I use XMLTV files downloaded from the Radio Times web site. When the time comes, the times in the XMLTV file are shown as BST - GB-PVR reads those literally (without worrying about daylight savings issues) and all is well as my PC/Windows clock will auto-adjust to BST.

It stores local date/times. As bgowland says, during the EPG import it uses the timezone info supplied by the EPG source to ask windows to convert the date/time to local date/time.

As long as Windows knows when the daylight savings changes occur, then GB-PVR should get it right.
