Changing DVB bitrate

Just wondered whether there was an easy way of changing the bitrate of DVB-recorded programs, or whether it was set by the satellite source. I am recording SD, FTA programs in NZ using a Twinhan DVB-S card, and as they are saved as 12000kbps files, I have to transcode them to bring them back to within standard specs if I burn them to DVD (I think the upper limit for standard DVD PAL files is 9800kbps).

Is there any simple way of having them record at a lower bitrate by default?

It's set by the broadcaster, but you try dvd patcher to trick the dvd into thinking the bit rate is lower. try http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVDPatcher
