setting the recording quality (high/medium/live tv

can someone tell me how can i set the recording quality. my TV card type is Generic Conexant Blackbird. i understand that the Medium quality is automatically used when doing quick record and the LiveTV quality is used when watching live TV. I have changed these two in the settings to be at 2000 Kbps for video and 224 for audio. however, this seems to have no impact on the recordings. my recordings are always at 2.5GB/hour (which is the original setting of 5000Kbps for video i believe) which I think is way too high. i want to change this to abour 1.5GB/hr. i would appreciate if someone can tell me how i can do this. thanks.

Last time I checked it was successfully change bitrates. I'll try some test recordings this weekend to double check.

if you could list out an estimate on how much space will be used per hour per setting.

An example would be

Medium Setting: 2.4Gigabytes/hour

What's the conversion for Kbps -> Mbits/sec?

Since I'm use to seeing Mbits/sec to determine the CBR.

Whenever I open the utility again, it reverts to "medium". Is it card dependant or am I doing something wrong, or does it record at the right quality but doesn't display it right?

To be quite honest, I've never calculated it. Why dont one of you guys record an hour and each level and report back how big the file is - then we'll all know.

You dont set the recording quality on that screen of the config app. It is just used for editing the attributes (bitrate, resolution etc) for each the available recording profiles (high, med, low, cust1, cust2). Its not reverting to Medium. That screen always shows medium when you first open it.

You set which profile is used when you actually schedule the recording from the TV Guide. If you click "record" you get to specify which profile to use. If you do a "quick record" it'll use the medium profile. If you watch LiveTV, it'll use the LiveTV profile.

http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm Setting Medium to about 5200 kb/sec gives about the same as DVD Long play in the hauppage software. That's 2 hours on one 4.7gb DVD. Quality might be a little less because GBPVR doens't do VBR and WinTV2000 does but I doubt it's noticable.

Sub, I guess as you said above, maybe you need to do something about that feature in the User Interface.
I also thought at first that choosing which quality from that list will immediately affect LiveTV I guess because it is in settings of the recorder.

I also have a blackbird card (Asus) and setting the recording quality at various levels for different shows seems to have no effect. I too get 2.5GB/hr no matter if I choose low/medium/high quality. Was there a fix for this I missed? The card is an HP OEM card that I got from compgeeks a while back, and it works flawlessly otherwise.

I could be wrong....

But I have assumed these 'quality' settings only apply to cards with hardware compression. (Hauppauge etc.)

I therefore assume that my Digital Twinhan can't make use of this feature I just get whatever is the broadcast bitrate.

Can someone please confirm these are correct statements or otherwise enlighten me.
