For playback recordings it should be fine.

ATSC devices dont work fell well with Live TV with an MVP given the large amount of time required for the mux filter to start producing data.

The MVP will not playback a HD recording without transcoding, as it only supports DVD-compliant resolutions. In today's latest GB-PVR release GB-PVR has an option to transcode a .ts file to mpg on the fly when the MVP requests it, but it takes a pretty beefy CPU to down-scale the video and convert the audio (AC3 on the channels I've been recording) in real-time.

If your CPU can't handle it in realtime, you can convert the .TS recordings to MPG using the new Transcode option in Video Library.

The only SD HDHR recordings I've tried on the MVP has AC3 audio, so it still needed to be transcoded, unless of course you don't want the audio. Smile I don't know if that's common or not.

If the SD cable channel is not sending AC3 audio, will MediaMVP be able to handle the live tv without extra transcoding on the GBPVR side? Or the GBPVR still need to do the TS->PS transcoding?

Yes, it still needs to do this. The Cyberlink and ATI mux filters add about a 4 second delay doing this.

In my experience TS->MPG transcoding is really fast on even a moderate PC, as long as the raw MPG within the TS stream and audio data isn't being altered.

For a point of reference, doing the HD down-scaling my AMD 2500 can almost keep up with real-time MVP viewing. Depending on what you have, you might be able to even do HD in real-time.

It depends on a certain amount of data being available though, which is why the mux filters trying to do it in real time during a recording need to wait a few seconds before they have enough info to proceed.

Oh, right. I didn't mean to sound like I was discounting what you said. I hadn't even thought to mention the delay since it seemed obvious to me, which of course it might not be for people dealing with the MVP and .ts streams the first time.

I'm just glad the new feature .ts to MVP features can allow my kids to stop scheduling American Idol to record in HD and analog SD. They've hated having their viewing options limited. Smile
