Anyone know how I can set up my system to automatically re-encode BBCHD transmissions in the UK into something more manageable size wise? Or does this defeat the point of recording in HD in the first place?!

In theory, yes it can, but I've not tried.

Yeah, it sort of does. You might be able to find some middle ground though.

My personal opinion is that if you want to go HD then you need the full range of kit to handle it.

I'm pretty happy with SD digital although I've experienced enough of the 'wow' factor with HD to make me want to go that way one day....but not yet.
