I am new to the whole networked GBPVR idea. Is it possible to have a desktop that functions as a server as well as a standard PVR that outputs to a tv? And, then have a laptop that will act as a client to watch tv "over the network" as it might be?

How do you set up GBPVR on the server & client to enable watching TV across the network? I'd love to be able to do this Smile

Try searching the forums a bit. It's been discussed. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone has setup a howto guide in our wiki yet.

OK,

So works obviuously pays me to sit here and write a PVR guide from memory, so thats what I did. Big Grin

I have it as a Word 2003 doc at the moment, and after I get home, I'll do some screenshots etc, and finish it up, then get a login to the Wiki to add this doc.

This is at quite a low level, but I have left the choice of access (sharing v streaming) to the user to decide, and the same goes for renderer / decoder setup.

Can someone please take a read and see if this makes sense, or if I have forgotten anything I wasn't too sure on the setup of streaming, and I only added a couple of lines. If anyone has anything to add, it would be greatly appreciated.

The zip file contains the Word Doc, as it exceeded the max size of 19KB for that file type (19 KB is probably just the Word doc file overhead these days!)

Thanks

ok one problem, so far: port numbers, and locations.

I think the server must have 7967 open for both, and 7968 for streaming (I think)
and the client only needs 7967. for sure Smile

about liveTV and file sharing, I personally have my live TV setting really high, because I have an HDTV on the main server, so it has to be high quality. I know this causes problems because the bitrate I record at is higher than what my network can deliver.
I have no idea where the streaming setting come from... but I could figure that out.

Good job! I only looked at the txt file; I'm assuming they are the same. I don't see anything obvious missing, but I guess you'll find out soon enough when people start using the guide Wink

Thanks Ted, I had both open on both machines as I was having issues with my resume points not sharing and it seemed to fix it - but who knows, I was just happy it worked (as I was manually trying to find my last watched point in the video)
I thought Sub had said both ports to be open, but that was obviously on the server only.

Thanks for your help & input.

How ironic that this thread would come out now. Three days ago I decided to "try" the client mode on my main pc (since I pulled out the capture card....long story.) Anyway, I started down the WIKI path, but it looked like more trouble than it was worth, so I ignored the documentation (nasty habit of mine) and had it up and running in less than 5 minutes.

I must say that Sub did a brilliant job with the 'client mode' - when I first started using GBPVR, that's exactly how I wanted to implement it - client/server mode (I liked that setup with mythtv), but soon discovered the MVP which pretty much took care of that.

I tried 'filesharing mode' and it was dog awful slow - this is 100Mb wired going to a LinkSys WRT54G running DD-WRT.

I switched to 'streaming mode' and it works wonderfully.

Thanks for updating the docs, JonnyCam!
