Spec for client PC

If I ran GBPVR on a fairly powerful pc, e.g. AMD dual core 3800+ with 2Gb Ram, and used this as a server for music, DVD's and TV, could I use a lower sprec pc as a client to use the media on the server?

I'm thinking specifically of using a tablet pc as the client - something like a Celeron 500/800 with 256Mb Ram in various rooms of the house. The network would be a wired 100Mbps.

I'm sure I'd get reasonable performance for music, but what about DVD and/or TV, either Live or Recorded?

As long as your client is powerful enough to handle playback of mpeg files, you'd probably be fine. You might find menus to be a bit sluggish, though.

Agreed. As long as the client systems can decode MPEG-2, you wont have a problem.

I have a 500Mhz Celeron tablet PC and its a bit slow. Even playing MPG files locally isn't very good. So I think it's down to video and screen performance. Memory is a problem - mine is 256Mb and can't fir any more. I went for win2k to make it fit. Mine is a touch screen and I really miss scroll buttons on menus , I have to use a screen keyboard to scroll

The recommened minimum is a 1GHz PIII class CPU, so your 500Mhz Celeron is a bit on the slow side.

yeah, but using win2k makes it so much easier on the system, less bload (insert standard comment about new operating systems ALWAYS adding bloat)... you might even try XP embedded:p could tear out even more stuff you dont need

yeah touch screen must be nice... I want to set that up for a car one day, that will be interesting. have to find some application that will do navigation. maybe even one of those three way displays!

Touch screen is nice for some things, but very frustrating when you see that nice big white arrow underneath "exit" (on mine) that no matter what you do, you can't get to the next item on the menu. Or have a long list of recordings/music but can only watch/play the first screens worth.

Hint: - what would be really nice and useful would be an arrow at top and bottom of the GBPVR screen that emulated a click of the mouse wheel.
