So Dell is keeping the option of Windows XP open. Quite a few people seem to be frustrated with Vista. I guess I'm going to stay with XP which has performed really well for me.

I'm not eager to upgrade, but I think Dell may be responding to more business centered people who react poorly to Vista's video requirements. Small businesses that would buy consumer-oriented PCs as an all purpose machine might not want to invest in a decent video card or wait while the minimums try and process Aero. Others would rather somebody else work the bugs out and upgrade when the first service pack comes around. Even if you aren't against the new OS, waiting has its rewards.

I've been reasonable happy with vista. Aero looks pretty nice on my machine and my new 24" LCD monitor.

It definitely feels a little more sluggish than XP on the same hardware though. A couple of things I havnt liked are the new Windows Explorer and the file protection (virtual store) getting in the way.

All in all though, I'm still happy to be using it. Its been very stable for me. I've not had a single blue screen or lockup type incident.

I do also notice that having the new direct3D based interface seems to be a little less friendly to having video running on the desktop. It seems more likely to stutter or skip frames when you're doing things that require video card (moving windows around etc), but I'm putting some of that down to the fact I got my new monitor at the same time as Vista, and now running at 1900x1200 - which is probably pushing the video card relatively hard.

No 'Wow' from me.

I installed Vista Ultimate on my ( OK, actually my Wifes ) Client PC at the weekend using a spare hard drive.

The 'Aero' gui looks nice but that is about the best I could say for it.

I only played for a couple of hours but had problems with IE7 retaining its proxy settings, HP printer not working although the driver seemed to install OK, bad clicking on the AC97 sound.
Everthing seemed to have a Wizard to automate setup, but in my network setup the assumptions Windows was making were largely wrong so the setup wizards failed and I had to go round manually resetting everything to make it work...a real pain.
I'm sure these are just teething problems/ setup /driver issues that would all be fixed with more effort, but I was left thinking "Why Bother". There was nothing about it that I saw in that time that would make the effort worth while. I couldn't see anything useful that Vista did better than XP.

After a few hours playing around ( and just before my wife got home !) I slapped the old hard drive back in and rebooted into good old XPpro, and I reckon I will leave it that way.

I did the same thing w/ my laptop. I had programs not work anymore (w/o doing a upgrade from XP instead of an install), noticed the system go slower, noticed I was going slower jumping through all the hoops, and that it was about 15% less efficient on battery life.

I think it would be great for an "average" to newbie user (eg, novice or grandparent) w/ all the help and security, but if you know how to manage our OS, apply patches, scan for viriuses and maintain a firewall, it's not worth it (imo).

I reverted my laptop to XP, because I need it for biz first, and for OS f/x a very distant 2nd. I'll update my personal sys when they make a must-play game that is vista-only.

For many business users all the eye candy that comes with Vista gives little (or no) value added. There's no point in spending money to upgrade unless you get something useful out of it.

I played with Vista in one of its pre-releases and with Vista Business on a test machine at work. I certainly didn't see anything that will make me upgrade until I absolutely have to. Then again, I'm one of those luddites who run XP in Classic mode...

I installed Vista and had to pull it off about 2 weeks later. I definitely preferred the UI over XP, and it seemed much nicer to use, but there were several issues that forced me back to XP.

I'll probably give it another go sometime in the future.

I agree w/zed, though I'm also a Classic guy! Wink

I remember when XP first came out and everyone pooped on it; today I can honestly say that it's been wonderfully stable for me and a great improvement over W98SE (crashed all the time). I can't for the life of me see why I'd want to buy Vista for all my PCs, but then I don't really care how pretty the desktop is!

I think we're seeing MS' best effort to migrate everyone to a platform for which they don't have to be apologizing all the time (security holes) and which is harder to pirate w/less lost revenue.

I don't wish them ill, but I am gonna stick w/XP! Cool
