Interesting. Since it was the oldest technology I thought it was usually lower quality than VMR9 and to a lesser extent VMR7 (since it shares components)
Guess it depends on the video card and what hardware they put in to support the renderers.
Good to keep in the back pocket. Thanks.

In my case my mb is NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430. But I will tinker with overlay and see... I would be curious what the side effects will be like the osd that sub mentioned.

I believe the trouble is that VMR7 and VMR9 allow what's called alpha blending which allows transparency. The overlay renderer doesn't support alpha blending so I would expect the osd to be opaque. That's a guess though.

Yeah, but your sd tv doesn't. Not only that, I think most equipment like plasma's are going HDMI now and DVI is pretty much for LCD computer monitors.

But you don't lose any picture quality when using a dvi to hdmi conversion cable do you?

That's true in general. A DVI display doesn't neccesarily work perfectly with a HDMI source because HDMI allows more bits and different color representations. That wouldn't be Smoker's case so you're right, it should work fine if he goes and buys an HD display.
