This is probably answered somewhere, but a quick search could not find the answer. If it is thanks for humoring me.

How do I change the live TV recording quality? I have scoured the config.xml with no joy.

Thanks,

Matt

In gbpvr-config-capt sources- your card-settings at the bottom the profile settings for the various profiles including Livetv.

edit: also here: http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Config/DefineSource
The screen has changed abit I think.

I have modified that info, but I am not sure that affects the default setting for live tv. Is live tv always medium?

Yeah, that is correct. Only analog tuners can have their quality changed, though (in case you are having a digital tuner).
I'm not always right

You can choose the profile you want to edit.

Livetv is not the same profile as medium.

Out of curiousity what do most people use as their bit rate for Live TV. The quality of the raw digital QAM transport stream feeds available on the HVR 1600 which show as about 3.1-3.7 Mbs, and on my cable PVR appears to be better than my analog settings which I capture at a much higher bitrate.

Put another way is anything above 4 Mbs really necessary for SD television recording?

I never use gbpvr for livetv, but i record at 4500-7500 kbps. I think I can see the difference with the default which is 1000 kbps lower.
My guess is that the digital stream you get from qam is made by a better encoder and very probably a better source to start with.

I use 4000, mainly because 3 shows after cutting commercials will fit on 1 DVD at that rate. I am going to try higher rates on some shows to see if it helps with 2 bad areas.
1) Water, any time I see water/waves/rain I can see blocks. I guess that every pizel is changing too much too fast for the encoder.

2) Faces. Some shows with large parts of the screen all one shade will have parts lag in motion. You will see a head move around, but the mouth/nose will stay in place. I think the encoder is keeping detail info over motion. Both are not bad, but I do notice it from time to time.
