My DSM-520 media player died and all other media players seem to have troubles too, so I'm investigating building an HTPC.

GBPVR appears to be the only software that will be compatible with the QAM portion of my HVR-1600 tuner cards (next version, right Sub?). I already use and enjoy GBPVR, but one big problem I found for HTPC purposes is the lack of a working fast forward and rewind.

The "skip" functions are nice for getting past a commercial or something, but I watch a lot of how-to shows (building, cooking, gardening, etc.) and often watch them in fast forward till they get to the section I'm interested in. Then I'll play at normal speed from there. Sometimes nothing in the show is of interest, and I end up fast forwarding through the entire show. It would take a lot of "skipping" to accomplish the same thing and would not be very user friendly.

Any chance of a normal fast forward and reverse in the next update? Preferably one with a couple of steps (i.e. first press is twice normal speed, second press is four times normal speed, third press is eight times normal speed). In other words, something that functions just like a VCR or DVD player does.

Thanks,

Anthony

Correct.

No changes on that front. Sorry, but I dont see this ever happening. The main problem with implementing this are limitations in third party directshow filters I rely on (and have no ability to change).

IIRC, use the cyberlink codec, and set gbpvr to <SkipInsteadOfFFRW>false
and you'll get a smooth ff at least...rw doesn't work right tho in this mode...
don't remember if it needs vmr or overlay...

oh and the MVP does smooth ff/rw....Big Grin

Hmm... Bummer.

Is it possible to call another media player (like VLC or Media Player Classic) from GB-PVR in a seamless way?

I noticed VLC provides multiple playback speeds, though it appears to be disabled in full-screen mode? Maybe it's just due to my current outdated video card? Smile

Thats obviously not the way I intend people to use GB-PVR, so there is no built in support for external players.

Both myself and Ubu (author of UbuStream) have developed alternative Internal Media Players via the Plugin System. My plugin currently only uses a Windows Media Player component, but still does not support fast forward or rewind. In the future I do plan to add VLC as an option to use instead of WMP, but I won't focus on that until I have a fully functional plugin.

Ubu has developed a whole bunch of Internal Media Players for his UbuStream plugin. He has Internal Players for WMP (which I based mine off of), VLC, Quicktime, and Real Video/Audio. I haven't played around too much with the functionality of these players since I have been so busy developing my own, but it might be something you could look into. If the functionality you are looking for isnt supported in UbuStream I guess you will have to wait until I make my release of ComTweak with an Internal VLC Player (which I plan on trying to support real rewind and fast forward).
