Seems like quite a good price

And long may the prices come down 'cos storage is certainly becoming an issue. I've only been using GBPVR for a few months and already I'ge got 60Gb of recorded live music programs - and T in the the Park comming up this weekend. Add that to 100Gb mp3s, 50Gb photos and videos etc... and you still need to back it all up - imagine having all your stuff on one of them and no backups and it going down
I had a quick look at the spec and sadly no room for a second drive, so no raid.

yep, just the same as with any HD really, whether NAS or internal. you need to protect against HD failure, fire & theft, depending on how precious your data is. Raid 1 only protects you against HD failure.

My photo collection is backed up everywhere, including off-site. My TV recordings are easy come, easy go (i.e. I would be miffed to loose them but I am not prepared to spend money on backing them up). My 130GB of mp3's are a little vulnerable atm, sitting on a raid 0 setup with maybe most of it backed up to another drive in the same pc. So if the pc is stolen, they're gone...

I have upgraded the HD capacity in my gbpvr system twice and now have 250GB(xp + recordings)+400GB (archive)drives.

Not only that, but you need to look after your programs too - I just spotted an article on the Beeb (here if you are interested) concerning the lack of backward compatibility of file formats - having your data is all very fine, but you still need a program which will open it (e.g. try opening an MS SQL 6.5 database with SQL 2005). I've been using that as a justification for making 'backup' Wink copies of the Seatle mob's software for years. And I think it goes without saying that an essential part of backing up is making sure that the backup is viable by restoring/using it.

I've got old data on 8" floppies, 5-1/4" floppies in multiple formats, 5-1/4" cartridge WORM drives, 14" glass WORM drives, 10mb tapes, 120mb tapes, 4gb DAT tapes, 10gb DLT tapes.

I can't read any of the above other than the 5-1/4 WORMs - bugger can't read them either as my SCSI controller is ISA and I have no ISA slots any more.

That's a fine collection - I wonder if anyone else could beat that.

Don't worry, there's probably some data recovery company out there could copy them all onto a CD for you... Wink

I just noticed your edit - did you just go and test that?

Holy Crap! 100GB's of Mp3's??

Your taste in music must be very broad. Since the early days of Napster I have had pretty much every song I want (including complete discographies for my favorite bands). I probably only buy / download about 10 songs a year now to keep up. I just checked my music folder - 3.8GB.

Hmmm...This may be one of my first indications that I'm turning into an old fart.

No, it suddenly crossed my mind when typing.

The 8080 source code for my home made Morse keyboard is on one of the 8" disks. The format was wierd as it was from a serial pot controller as no one could afford 'proper' disk controller chips in those days. I think I got 80k on a single sided 8" floppy!.

I'm widely known as a 'boring old fart' by my wife, kids, grandkids, buddies, clients and probably most of the folks who have read any of my posts. I am also proud to be a pedant. But the best thing about getting past 50 is that you are allowed to be a grumpy old git.

As to the large collection of mp3s, about 50% of them are mine, 30% are my kids (they are both music fanatics too) and the rest are my parent's. About 40% are converted from vinyl and audio cassette. I do sometimes do a random couple of hours from the whole collection using winamp - amazing how many I recognise.

I am now intersted in music videos (hence gbpvr) by which I mean recordings of live performances as opposed to the MTV style soft porn/cartoon to music stuff. I do expect further groth in my storage requirements. Smile

The oldest storage media I have is a program (which I wrote in the 70's for an IBM 360/30) on punched cards. You used to get 80 bytes on one card... Wink
