Do you mean putting the older computer by the TV as the client, leaving the new computer upstairs as a server? Would I be able to create an HD PVR for the TV then? Also I would not have a remote control for it since the TV card has to be in the computer upstairs and I would not be using the MVP.

You would need your HD source (a STB ?) near your Recording computer (the server) That might mean you can't have your server too far from the TV, unless you setup your HD STB with your server. (most people have that near their TV)

The client would need a Remote/IR Interface. If the only one you have is part of the tuner card, then you would need something else for the remote like an MCE Remote...

You could always get an MCE remote for the client. That's what I did and I have been very happy with my old Shutttle PC as a client. After all, don't we all live to buy more hardware?

The other main advavtage, IMHO, to using a client pc is native support for AVI files. My server pc is pretty old and always struggled with transcoding files for the mvp.

The HD source is an OTA antenna. It is hooked up to the server computer that is NOT near the HD TV. I also have analog cable hooked into the server computer's Hauppauge 1600 dual tuner card. Unfortunately the client computer does not have enough horsepower for the 1600 card.

So it sounds like this would work. I do have 2 Hauppauge remotes - 1 from the MVP and 1 from the 1600 tuner card, but I do not think I could use them on the client unless I put some sort of transmitter on the client. Can you post a link about how to set the GBPVR client up?

One other possible issue- the server has WinXP Media Center installed, the client has Windows 2000 installed.

Not a transmitter but a receiver. Has to receive the IR from the remote and respond. Sometimes called a beanbag.

Zehd's links to the wiki are all you need to get the old pc set up as a client. Sub has made this part pretty simple.

Before you do too much though you may want to verify that the pc that will be the client is capable of playing back the HD files. Mine is not able to play live TV from the server so I don't have it set up as a true client. We only use it to watch recorded shows so it is really just using GBpvr as a nice interface to browse files on the server. This is done by setting up the shared network folders on the directories tab in the config app. You could probably do this to try playing files across the network before trying to get a remote working.

My "client" can play back HD files that have been processed with Videoredo to remove commercials and saved as an .mpg file but it won't play back the unprocessed .ts files from the 1600.:confused:
