I have not used MythTV for some years but I found it much harder to wrap my head around. It was quite modular but that also meant learning how everything fits together.
Sub has done a really great job making sure everything is easy to use and configure.

The sheer amount of conflicting information from different developers and such made it harder to find information. Having Sub as a single authority on the core product ensures that you have the correct info. Also, the community support consists of, quite possibly, the friendliest and most helpful people of any forum on the net.

I agree that this is probably the most responsive/helpful forum I have ever encountered, but I think it it due to our (as a community) passion for GB-PVR.
I know we all answer questions that have been answered many times before, some more gracefully than others:p

but i think there is a good reason lots of nix people just say RTFM, usually because the "FM" actually has the exact answer to the question you asked. alot of time and effort has gone into creating "man pages", so they could be the one place you go to to learn about how to use something. most of them are pretty good, and if you know how to use them properly, you wouldnt really have to ask alot of those questions... so, I understand when people get upset that someone is asking a question that is answered in a readily available reference. they just dont have to be such D!(|<5 about it.

if anyone is looking for a good place to ask general linux questions, linuxquestions.org is a very good site, and they are usually accepting of people who dont "RTFM", from what I remember when I was trying to get my linux boxes set up.

For over two years I used KnoppMyth which was supposed to simplify things, but every time I upgraded or added hardware it was endless searching for answers. One day I was just fed up and tried GBPvr and haven't looked back since. My box stays up without a fight and we actually use it to watch recordings... Imagine that!

I looked at the Mythtv homepage recently and noticed that it doesn't appear that it has advanced all that much in the year or so I've been away. When I was running it was really advanced compared to other pc based projects, but now it seems like it's middle-of-the-pack. I could be wrong, but that's just how it appears.

The FM is only any good if you know the name of the command - I could find no way to locate the command for say, unload xxx driver and reload yyy driver. So the FM is only any good if you know the FM anyway :eek:

I had the same problem when I started, after using CLS in DOS for so long you would have thought that would be the same, but no! use CLEAR, grrr
Now I type more Linux in DOS

Then again, I had to learn CLS at school.....

It wouldnt be able to view livetv from your mythtv backend, and would only be able to watch your recordings if they shared on a samba share.

From your reply my guess is that the filename would be displayed, rather than something more meaningfull (from mysql)
How do you deal with that in GBPVR, what is the database?

GB-PVR has its own database that holds metadata about recordings, and shows this info during playback.

Remember, GB-PVR is not a mythtv client. Its obviously not going to know anything about any metadata mythtv might hold in it's database for recordings it has made. You'd just be playing mythtv recordings as regular files, so would only have the filename displayed. Same deal in reverse if mythtv tried to play GB-PVR recordings.
