Hi

Finally installed the new Nova S Plus and tried it out. After huge problems finding a mux that worked, I now get from NZ TV1,2 and 3 recording that only fill about 80% of the widescreen tv that I use via MediaMVP.

Is this (smaller than normal) picture a byproduct of the mux I am using or is it normal for DVB-S via MediaMVP? The recordings from the PVR500 fill the screen as usual.

Pretty sure. It plays all of the other recordings in the normal manner ie the picture fills the screen. 4:3 ratio are just stretched (from TV1 and 2) and pillar boxed on TV3).

Widescreen DVB-S recordings are displayed as widescreen but they have a black border around all sides. It's as though the image I am getting from the card is less than the expected width and height. It could be a property on the Nova card itself.

sounds like what they do here, lots of channels broadcast sd content on HD channels with a black border around all sides, and if the player can't compensate, you get a squished picture..[IMHO the worst way to get sd on hd]
tho usually its only on 4:3 material cuz widescreen would look horrible if done this way...

if it's in the picture itself, to get rid of it you'd have to transcode, cutting the borders off...

i believe Z-Process can do this nicely for you...[has nice border options and is made for mvp transcodes]

have you checked the properties of the file? what aspect and sizes are reported?

Looks like your right stustunz. I have just been reviewing some TV3 material and the picture size is all over the place even though the mpg is 720x576 as expected, the picture itself varies in size quite a bit during the News segments. TV1 and 2 seems much more reliable.

Looks like something we have to put up with.

Cheers

GB-PVR not having any control over the MVP aspect ratio complicates things further, but for a bit of insight on what is happening read this thread: http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=28210

Thanks Sub

Yes - its a very mucky situation isn't it. I have been able to get some success filling the screen with TV1 after applying the MVP sizing suggestions you gave to someone else with a similar problem, but TV3 is really hopeless. Right now, my bigger problem is the mux. The THMPG... mux works fine visually but its loosing lipsync after a few minutes. So, I have reached the conculsion that DVB-S is just too difficult to manage in an MVP environment and gone back to analogue. Perhaps when I build an HTPC and can save recordings and playback using DVR-MS or TS the situation will improve. But converting to MPG using a mux just isn't working. The pity is that the picture quality through DVB is so darn good compared to my rather poor analogue signal.

I am using the v2022 thmpgmux (which is the only one I have found that works for me) and my signal level is full scale on the strength indictors I have used. After just checking the latest attempt's mpg file in Media Player, it plays perfectly and keeps lip sync all the way through to the end. But when I play thast same recording through MVP it looses sync badly. Interesting...

I will so some more research perhaps before giving up completely. My instincts are driving me towards an HTPC rather than the MVP. I suspect many issues would go away.
