Hi all, I'm new to the forum, but not to using GB-PVR.

Currently I use a Hauppauge 250 and a MediaMVP for watching tv and recordings.

Our tv was recently upgraded to a nice HDTV set, and now I'm wanting to take advantage of that. We are also in the process of moving into a new house that has FIOS, so I'll have more HD signals coming into the tv. I'm wanting to make sure my thoughts are in the right order.

1) I need to upgrade to the latest 1.0.8 of the software
2) Upgrade tuner to a HVR-1600

Now, here's the tricky part. The computer will be in the office, and the tv is in the living room.

I have a laptop that has digital audio out, but it only has a vga output. I'm hoping to find a way of getting the vga on the laptop onto the tv. If I can't find a way of getting the vga to a DVI or HDMI, then I may build a media pc.

How successful have people been at streaming HD quality over a network to a tv in another room? Chances are I'll only be watching recorded shows through the media pc and not live tv too.

Am I missing something?

The media MVP will be relegated to either the master bedroom, or the "workout" room (a spare room we don't know what to do with) for analog duty.

Welcome to the Forum !

I don't know what the distance from office to livingroom is but you can always go from VGA to DVI like the Gefen one. It might be intresting to look at their products.
If the distance is to big AND you've got some money to spare you can go from
VGA->DVI->DVI range extender over CAT 5e->TV set (220 ft max) this extender can even transport an additional USB signal (2 cat5e cables needed)

hmmmmm come to think of it, pretty intresting for myself too Big Grin

the laptop cant output a digital video signal so if you want to use it you could maybe get convert the vga to rgb component (doesnt always work depends on video card in laptop)
doing what sumo said going from vga to dvi isnt really going to gain you anything as the signal has already been degraded to analog plus the tv can do this already plus the cost
but then you have issues with controlling it unless you have radio frequency remote or use remote extenders (which are useless unless you want to spend lots)
and for the price of buying all the converters /cabling etc
you could build another machine
im not saying sumo is wrong it will work
If it was me i would move the computer to the lounge then run the laptop in the other room (if you cant afford another computer at the moment)
but the big question is are you allowed???

does the new HD set have vga inputs? if so then plug the laptop into it directly and use client mode on it...that is if it has a video card capable of HD decoding..Big Grin

there are long distance hdmi wiring relays, and i've even seen hdmi over cat5e adapters..

depends on the speed of your laptop[or other available system to sit next to tv]
and the connection options on your tv..
it's the only way to get full control of gb with true hd playability..[so far]

that would be one of the best solutions. Buy a small/silent barebone f.i.

now that would be the main question, especially if you're also putting (lots) of money in another house Wink

The Laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN-TX750P. Horsepower-wise, it'd be a fine client. The downside is the built-in video is the Intel 950, which I doubt if it supports component.

The TV is a Mitsubishi 57732 rear-project DLP. It has a DVI-I. It does have firewire, but I believe that's for hooking up camcorders to it.

Moving the desktop into the living room would be a big no-no. It was built a few years ago when I was in to overclocking and I had the "my box has to be better than yours" problem. It's a dual-proc AMD with way too many fans to put into a living room.

Building a small, semi-quiet computer is a little out of the budget right now as I'm trying to buy a ring. Although, I did spec out a nice little box on Newegg and came out to "only" $650 (without software, so $800 w/ windows).

We are renting the house, but we're renting it from family who has given me the go-ahead to run speaker cables through the walls for the surround sound as well as running ethernet to any room in the house that I want. We may end up buying it in a year or two if I get the raise this year that I'm supposed to get.

I would be running wired to get the video to the tv.

From what http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI_info.html says, I may end up just needing a VGA-DVI-A cable, but I have an email out to their support to see if I read their website correctly.

Edit: I also found out that in order to capture the digital data to the computer, I'll have to hookup a set top box to the computer and control that through an IR emitter.

This is starting to look like a pain, but we'll see. We'll have 3 tv's in the house, two with a mediaMVP and whatever I can figure out for the big TV.
