I really think by default windows 2000 just plain uses less resources.
I nlited (butchered) my copy of 2000 to the point where it booted up using about 25 mb of ram & about 40 mb of virtual ram.

this was just the OS, virus & mailware scanners added more overhead of course.

But, I also lost the add/remove option in the control panel & nothing that relied on the MS HTML engine would install on the machine.

It was just an experiment on my part.
I installed it on an older 700mhz PC with 383mb ram & gave it to my wife for surfing the net & word processing.

however, open office, firefox, avg, & zonealarm free worked fine on it & have for a while.

Plus the PC is still fast enough where she doesn't complain.

At the moment, I have XP running on 65mb of ram when it boots up....only problem is, it won't run gbpvr yet. I cut just a little too much out with nlite Wink

I've done almost the same thing in the past.
I could get GBPVR to run in client mode but I fudged whatever allowed a tuner card to work on the system.

When my stripped version is stable and such, I will post my config file. Just busy for a little while finishing school this semester and starting a new job.

since .net2 and gbpvr can run on windows 2000 you should probably go with that. windows 2000 can be stripped down even without that program, I have myself killed lots of services by trial and error fopr another purpose (to run windows 2000 on a bare minimum 300 mhz 128 mb ram mashine. turns out it's doable, although you should never try to run xp or 2000 from a flash drive (even if you trick it into believing it's a fixed drive) they just write to swap too much. those million cycles flash memory can do would be used up too quickly. Win 2000 is the way to go if you have the drivers to work with, if it's gonna be a dedicated video box it's the way to go. If your gonna throw a little webTV in the mix although dun go with firefox if it's a bare minimum mashine since firefox suffers from some sort of memory leak to longer you surf to more memory it consumes.

Try this as another good services guide:

I think that's right, but I'm surprised I haven't seen/heard more about the "write filters" that XPe (embedded) employs. Looky here.

I don't know anything at all about Embedded but that diskless PCs can work with it causes me to want to find out just what a license might cost... (oops, an individual license is $90 but the development tools required to configure XPe are $995!)

Amckee.... do you have a config file?
I have just reinstalled by PC, and would like to take the opportunity to strip XP Home as far as possible still allowing GBPVR + MVP, media player, a bittorrent client and folder sharing on the network.

Regards,

I'll dig it up...I just moved and haven't gotten the NAS set up with all of the stuff that I'd been working on. I never actually got it finished, but you're welcome to play with what I do have.
