This is driving me absolutely batty.

In AC3, the input is showing as MPEG while playing the DVD. Shouldn't it be AC3? Still, I have passthrough checked for MPEG as well. Just seems odd. I even tried a couple DVDs.

There was something I had to do before to get this working, I just don't remember what. Like turn on passthrough in Windows media player? But the only passthrough option I can find are the ones on the AC3 filter.

I remember setting up a friend’s computer and the problem was the settings on the sound card. His interface was similar to yours and that dsp/virtual 7.1 looks familiar. If I remember correctly we had to change that to something else to get 5.1 or it was converted to 2 ch only. Wish I could remember the exact steps but it wasn't obvious at the time and it has been a while.

Using AC3Filter audio decoder - didn't even have ffdshow installed, but out of desperation I installed it last night.. couldn't find any passthrough settings in it so I haven't tried it yet.

I can get 5.1 to work, but only when I turn on the DDL - obviously not something I should or want to do with a DVD.

If you click on the icon next to the dsp or the 7.1 virtual icon doesn't it change the setup or options? If I remember correctly it was something like that or I could be completly wrong.

Thanks Dark - nope that doesn't help anything. It just enables you to alter the sound level to each speaker.

I also tried ffdshow, but with the same result.

I'm not even sure what else to try.

ok answer a few questions for me
what are you playing your dvd with ie windows media player ,power dvd, gbpvr
have you tried installing a different filter other than ac3 filter(normally what ever you install last is the default so try reinstalling a different filter) sorry cant think of one off the top of my head
if you have nvidia pure video decoder it seems to have nice audio component to it that has audio out options
its what i use on my main pc

just looking at your screen shot you have tried the setting dolby digital live havent you ?
just did a quick google and i think this is the setting you have been overlooking

I believe the solution is here:

http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=5553

This is freakishly simple, and I've always wanted to convert it to a wiki page. It's a bookmark I've had for more than a year, so I can guess it would have been difficult to find...

I used to ask 'why?' Now I just reinstall...

Tried playing DVD with GBPVR (PVRX2 and old GBPVR), and WMP 9. I've tried AC3, ffdshow, Intervideo non-CSS, and MPEG Decoder (not sure what this is, ATI?). I have Purevideo, but it was causing problems with PVRX2 on recording playback so I haven't used it. I guess I could try. But it seems the problem is not a decoder one - why does AC3 detect the input as a MPEG stream?

Dolby Digital Live has the sound card convert the stereo sound to 5.1 - as I mentioned this isn't something I want or should do with a DVD that is already 5.1. DDL is basically a glorified Pro Logic which my receiver already does. It should just be passing thru the 5.1 audio stream.

Thanks for the link Zehd, I'll check that out.
