gbpvr vs. mythtv

I've got an htpc setup running mythtv, mythdora specifically. I;m not too experienced with linux so I'm running into basic problems all the time! I had dd 5.1 working, all of the sudden it stops, had the remote control working, that stopped working after a reboot. I can't get that working again, running into problems saying the device doesn't exist even though it's there. I'm tired of all the problems I'm having. I want something that works and work like it's supposed to. I was wondering if I could get some people on here to tell me the plusses and minuses versus mythtv compared to gbpvr. One major plus for me off the bat is Windows. What format does it record in? I see it transcodes, burns shows to dvds, all that fun stuff. What about the recording options (record daily, weekly, wishlist)? How difficult is it to set up? I have a lot of experience with windows. I appreciate your help!

First off, I'm sure you'll have read that that there are plenty of myth converts here. Mostly because GB-PVR is just so easy to install...

If you have a supported remote/ir receiver and Tuner card, and the PC is fast enough (P4 1 to 2 ghz ish) then you should be able to use GB-PVR - no problem...

GB-PVR is a MPG centric system. That said, it will also record to dvr-ms format too depending on your hardware. If you're doing mostly analog TV then it'll be MPG.

It works great with the MVP. If you wish to watch non mpgs on the MVP you'll have to transcode, you won't have to worry about transcoding if you play off the computer. If the media file plays in WMP, then it should play in GB-PVR.

You will need a MPEG2 codec...

I started out with myth, but had similar problems getting (and keeping) a working box...

GBPVR - is quick and usually painless to install/setup, plus possibly the best thing is the forums here, where everyone is always friendly and support from both Sub and other members is fantastic

i had two years myth on the run. I never had a really working System. Once i installed it in the living room and my wife tried it 10 minutes....
Recording Services not startet, remote not found, wakeup und sleep works only in 50%....
For 2 Months i changed to gbpvr......and now i have a working system. The installation is easy, now i know what i am doing when i follow an installation guide. Okay some minor things dont work, but i thing i can fix it in short time.

All what you know from myth is here too. Weekly recordings, webinterface, burn shows on DVD, short "boot" times from hibernate....all here on a easy to configure windows system.

I dont regret these step away from myth.

The best thing is maybe to give it a try. If you only have the one PC then setup a dual boot so you can go back to Myth if things don't work out (very unlikely :p ).

And if you do run into problems or are unsure on the setup then read the wiki, use the search and then post a question on the support forum. We're a friendly bunch...

how about online scheduling? With mythtv they have a webserver built in and you can schedule, view, and delete recordings. They also have places for videos, music, settings, steamingtv, statistics, and status along with the epg listings.
