More Info:

Tried Nvidia audio decoder... it SAYS it is a Dolby Digital 5.1 stream, but the receiver is still only getting a stereo stream. This is crazy.

Just for kicks, I moved the same SPDIF cable from my HTPC to and old DVD player and 5.1 works fine (just making sure it wasn't the receiver).

EDIT: Haven't tried the info in Zehd's link yet.. there is alot of info there, I'm sure exactly how to apply it...
Dedicated HTPC: MSI K7N420 Pro, AMD 2200+, 1.5GB RAM, PVR150, 550Pro, ATI 9800XT, 300GB Maxtor HD, Diamond XTreme DDL Sound, MVP over wireless bridge, GBPVR 1.2.13

The first post in the thread I posted includes two scenarios. A half a post doesn't seem that bad, does it?

This goes back to what I was saying. This was the exact problem I was having and it was a something in the soundcard setup options. Sure wish I could remember the magic steps.

I know you guys are sick of me... sorry.

More wierdness. I thought I as on to something because the lastdvdgraph showed the AC3 audio going from the DVD navigator to Nvidia Audio Decoder to AC3Filter to System Default sound card...

I had the audio decoder set to Nvidia, why would it then goto AC3filter?

So after trying to configure AC3Filter to work again with no success, I completely uninstalled it. Re-installed FFDShow, set that as my DVD Audio decoder.

Now - It STILL shows Nvidia Audio decoder in the lastdvdgraph. The ffdshow is there, but is not connected to any streams.

Seems I got something screwy with my codecs, but not sure how to resolve sans an OS reinstall (which I am not willing to do just yet).

Not sure about the DSP hammer - I've since re-installed the sound card driver with a different version hoping it might correct the problem. And the hammer is gone now.

Actually in one of your posts you check SPDIF output on your sound card - you specifically don't want to do that since the sound card will grab the SPDIF not allowing something like AC filter to pass through the sound. It will output Dolby and seem to be working but the sound card is generating a remixed Dolby not your source file.

Read the link below - its the best description of SPDIF I have seen and really helped me get it working correctly. (using AC3filter)

Hints like : If you have two sounds playing, dolby will be shut off and the sound remuxed really is eye opening)

Awesome link Carpe, a great read, thanks. I now understand what some of those AC3 settings do.

I need to figure out my codec issue... anyone know of a utility to pull up all your codecs and uninstall them? Tongue

I uninstalled ffdshow and reinstalled AC3Filter, and at least I'm back where I was. The lastdvdgraph shows the audio going from Dvd Navigator -> AC3Filter -> Sound card

But still can't get 5.1 to work.

When I tried PowerDVD, it says the audio stream is 5.1 - but the receiver isn't getting it. So I can only assume it's the sound card?

Everything I've read for the card says to make sure you have your media app set to passthrough and the sound card will passthrough any encoded streams it detects. There isn't any setting on the card itself to turn this on.

One odd thing, when I use GBPVR it changes my volume from max to like 95%. From that AC3 article, you should have your volume and mixer settings set to max or the sound card will alter the stream (and screw up passthrough). I though this was my issue, but if it was then PowerDVD should have worked ok. But then again I couldn't find a passthrough setting in PowerDVD either, so I dunno.

About ready to give up.
