I have never had any trouble playing HDTV transport streams (typically 15Mbps) but can't play HD-DVD (VC-1, virtually 2x HDTV) without oc'ing my P4 3.2GHz.It depends where abouts in the world you are. In the USA your high def digital transport streams are MPEG2, wheras other parts of the world are standardizing on MPEG4 H.264 transport streams for high def. H.264 is the same codec used on many BluRay and HD-DVD disks, and the H.264 broadcasts are very similar to what you'd find on these next generation disks. In these parts of the world most machines would struggle to play the video without the help of a videocard with hardware H.264 acceleration (like the new ATI HD 2400/2600 cards).
