Ok, I know everything is going against me now. Go ahead and crack your redhead jokes.

Fine.

I'm ordering the video switch. The tv card is boxed up for return. Done deal.

Now. My current problem is this.

I put the pc in the destination room with the big TV.
Since I can't hook it into the TV right now I put a PC display in there for now so I can mess with it.

Ok, so it's on my lan. I mapped drive letters to the multiple drives on the several PC's I have. I can open windows explorer and browse drives all over my place including the drives on my Mac and on my Linux computers. The PC can copy and open and browse and move files from any machine to any other machine. It's very happy and content with my lan setup. Everything looks and works great.

The problem is, gbpvr doesn't like to play nice with the lan mapped drives. Sometimes it will go into a directory and play a file but most of the time when I press the button to take me into that subdirectory it just takes me back to the main gbpvr menu (the start)..
If I try over and over and over, it may go in.

And yes, I went into the config program and told it where all the drives are, what directories, and gave them names.

The other thing is, the remote. I have a genuine windows MCE remote and remote receiver. Not a knock off but the real thing.
Earlier today I could use the remote to skip, FF, RW, and go back while a video was playing. Now it only lets me like use the arrow keys to move around the gb menus. Once I select a video, it's game over and I have to use the mouse to stop and get out of the video. Once the video starts the remote control quits working.

I don't understand why this is so difficult. I mean it works fine one time then the next it doesn't. What the heck?
Oh and if it matters, this is a fresh install of XP pro, freshly formatted the drive and installed XP yesterday. Or maybe it was the day before.
But it's fresh so it's not bloated up with junk.

You know, I'm not stupid. I graduated college and I can build a pc from total scratch and install windows or Linux on it. And I don't mean dummy ubuntu linux. I mean like Debian or Gentoo or Suse. (Duh, suse is easy) I think my skills are pretty decent. I can't program anything but I can put stuff together, I mean who can't? I just watched and learned. It's easy.

But this stuff is killing me. I am not used to stuff acting up on me, my stuff always works right. I am sooo frustrated with this... It's been a terrible experience.

Run GB-PVR Config, click the "DVD & Remote" tab and verify that you have MCE remote selected and not the Hauppauge Remote.

On the "General" tab, set the log level to "Debug" and check the box beside it for flushing the logs.

The next time it sends you back to the main menu when you try to navigate a subdirectory, zip and post your devnz\gbpvr\logs directory in the "Support" forum: http://forums.gbpvr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=7

And I don't make readhead jokes.

Ok, I made a zip of the logs. I'll post them in the support section.
I can tell you that some times I can change into a network directory and sometimes not. Once it decides to quit working, it quits working.

Also, the remote sort of works, when it feels like it.
Sometimes it operates like it should. Sometimes it does not.

Let me ask this, is there an older version of this program I can install?

Oh, and I totally uninstalled the program a while ago and wiped it clean from the PC then reinstalled it fresh so everything would be at default.
The ONLY thing I changed was to add the network shares then start it up.

Thank you.

I would think if windows has the drive mounted, you should be able to see it within GBPVR. If the drive requires a password to mount, then I don't think that will work.
There is an older version distributed with PVRX2. It's called GBVPR. However it is not being updated and will eventually be phased out from the distribution. I think PVRX2 is stable, but maybe your mileage is different. It uses the same config files so you can just run it and try it out.

Nope, no passwords required.
Like there's the satellite machine, I shared two drives on it and several directories on each drive. I can go into them maybe once or twice them boom, it just quits. Same with the Mac. I get a few uses on it and boom, down it goes.

I can have win explorer open at the same time and while gb-pvr is refusing to enter a shared lan directory, win explorer browses right on through and I can click on anything and view it with VLC or WMP..

So it's not like windows loses contact with the other machines, it's gb-pvr that's having the malfunction.

That is weird. I browse on another machine all the time no issue. Set your logging to debug and post your logs

Ok, I uninstalled the new one and put an older on one.
THIS version actually showed me an error message.

What the heck is that about? If there's something wrong, why does windows work fine with it?
And why does it work *sometimes* ??

Sigh....

Ok.. I think I got the silly folders/shares thing solved. For some reason gb hates one of the folders on my Mac and when I try to open it, boom, down it goes.

So I just eliminated that folder so it's not in the gb folder list and now it seems to be ok.

What I don't understand now is why the remote control works on *some* videos and not on others.
Like I can have an avi file that plays and I can FF through it just fine but the next avi file the remote control doesn't work at all and the only way to control the video is with the mouse. That's messed up.
It's not just avi files, it's all types. Some do, some do not.
And it won't play mp4 files at all.. Sad
And I have tons and tons of Xena shows in mp4. If I can't watch my Xena shows I get cranky..

Now that I have the worst problem behind me I'm starting to like this thing a lot. If I can get the remote control working right then that would be wonderful.

Once my video switch comes in and I can run this on the big tv, oh this will be mega cool. If it works as well as I think it might, I may build another one for the 45" tv in the living room.

Just getting the bugs out is driving me up the wall.
I used to have some help with stuff like this where I didn't have to bother people online. Now I'm on my own and it's pretty frustrating.

When things don't go right I sort of get a little attitude going on.
The past few days have pushed me to the edge, I was almost about to go get my Xena sword and chop-chop on the stupid thing.

Ok, fresh start tomorrow. Two things to do, figure out the mp4 problem and the remote control problem..

Thanks guys for putting up with me, I have been bouncing off the walls a bit.

sounds like you have something taking focus when you play a video, something like ffdshow in the system tray or the xvid codec...if they appear inthe sys tray then they can steal focus from the gbpvr app and this will probably be why your remote wont work.

The only way to tell is to start up on of the same avis in window media player (maybe) and see if anything shows up in the sys tray...and if it doesn, try and figure out how to stop it doing that...

Most likely you don't have a codec installed that will decode whatever video type is in the MP4. (It's a container and can have different formats) I'm pretty sure ffdshow will handle it. Don't know if you still need the Haali & Matroska splitters installed too. At any rate, download ffdshow and give that a shot.
