Sometimes I'd like to chuck the whole lot in the garbage, screen and all ... and just go back to reading books like our ancestors.

1. EPG. In New Zealand, the EPG situation is killing me. I've tried XMLTVNZ, but although the author has kindly made this program freely available, he (presumably having a normal life to live) does not keep it up to date frequently enough to cope with all the changes made to the websites it scrapes off. Therefore, I'm constantly battling to have a full EPG of just 5 channels, thats all. 5. Tv1, Tv2, Tv3, C4 and Prime. I was using a precompiled XML file that was secretly avaiable from a nice website, but that has recently disappeared. That, too, though caused me untold problems until I figured out how to use XMLTV to reformat the source file into an XML file that GBPVR was happy with. Right now, I can only get Tv1 and TV2 on my EPG. sob, sob, sob. I'm REALLY frustrated!

2. Hauppage. These guys do not have good support. For some reason, I'm one of the unlucky ones who's PVR 150's dont work so well. on C4, the sound pops, or rather, goes dead for very short periods (like 1/4 second) periodically. some shows are worse than others, and some days/weeks are worse than others. No solution as yet, so my favourite shows, Southpark and Family Guy are a hit and miss affair as to whether the audio will be acceptable, with just the odd pop, or absolutely unlistenable.

3. Widescreen/letterbox etc. This isn't a major, I guess, but when you buy a 32" TV, you really want to use the whole thing. F7 in GBPVR just doesn't seem to be able to give me an option where the picture fits nicely into the screen - it either has black bars somewhere, or cuts off part of the picture. sigh.

4. quartz.dll Why I need to replace this file with an older version I do not know ... is it microsoft's fault, hauppages, Nvidias??? But since I've rebuilt my HTPC several times, I've had to go through this process a lot. Again, not a major, but it took WEEKS to find the problem the first time.

5. Power saving. To be honest, the problems above have prevented me from investigating deeply into why I can't seem to get power saving to work properly. But I just gave up, and let the PC run 100% of the time. I wonder how much that is costing me? Electricity is so darned expensive nowadays.

6. Burning. When I first sat down and planned my HTPC, one of the things on my list was to have to ability to burn shows I'd recorded to DVD, which seemed like such an obvious thing to have. Even my mother-in-law can do it with her off-the-shelf Panasonic hard drive+DVD writer thingy (of course, she doesn't have an EPG, but I'm starting to envy her actually)

Sad

I even tried Media Portal. Lets not even go there!

I was thinking of installing a DVB card to get Freeview ... should I just commit suicide instead?

actually, I might commit suicide on someone else.

You know, I bought Windows MCE, so its not like I'm a tightass. Anyway, I think GBPVR is pretty good, and I don't use it because its free. I was going to try Sage, but it doesn't support DVB, so that would have been a waste of money in the long run.

What gets me is how hard this has all been. And why the EPG is such a problem. It seems TVNZ and SKY are real assholes about their EPG. Why couldn't Microsoft cut a deal with them, so that MCE would have worked?? Is it like this around the world? How come Tivo could get it to work in USA. How many countries has MS been able to get MCE to work in? How come NZ is such a pain with EPGs? And XMLTVNZ (Reven) gives me the shits. Sure he gave us a free screenscraper. But it never worked well. Now he wants us to 'donate' before he gives us V3. But V2.5 was never updated regularly, how can I trust V3 will be any better? Sky has just encrypted their website, so you can't scrape off it anymore. How long before screenscraping doesn't work on any websites anymore?

Are they trying to kill PVRs? The TV companies, I mean? They think because we have PVRs we dont watch any ads (ok, we watch fewer, but we still watch some). Hell, its not like we used to sit and religiously watch the ads in the old days. That was toilet/coffee/homework time! People have never watched all the ads!

I wouldn't mind paying $1/channel/month for an EPG. Why can't TVGuide offer that - they are allowed to print it in a magazine, why not sell it off from their website?

ok, enough ranting.

BTW, I live in Pukekohe, so not far from you! Actually I'll be in Hamilton next week.

To be honest, for the most part these arent GB-PVR problems so there isnt too much I can do to alleviate your pain.

Quote:1. EPG. In New Zealand, the EPG situation is killing me. This one is out of my control. I have no say over how often he updates his software. To be fair on reven, sky and tvnz have been particularly painful and have been changing their website to make things difficult for him. Web scrapers are always going to be flakey in this way.

If you added a DVB-S device to your setup then you'd be able to get the listings from the satellite service. That approach isnt going to have the downtime you're currently experiencing with xmltvnz.

Quote:2. Hauppage. These guys do not have good support. Again, this is probably outside of my control. You could see if it works better using the frequency for C4 instead of the channel number, and tweaking it a bit either way to see if it improves.

This one could be a thread of it's own, and I'm happy to work through it with you. GB-PVR is pretty good on this front, and very flexible, so I'm sure there is a good reason for anything odd you're seeing. Post the details and some screen shots to help the explanation and I'll give you some more info. What shape TV do you have?

Rememer a lot of shows these days include black bars at the top/bottom or sides as part of the picture either because they think it looks cool, or because TVNZ/Canwest are arc'ing 16:9 source video to 14:9 for displaying inside a 4:3 frame.

These are not GB-PVR problems.

I dont personally burn DVDs, so didnt bother implementing any feature to do this. I've seen a few posts about available DVD burning plugins, so there are options for you to look at. I cant vouch for them myself since I havnt used them.

It might be on the wiki under utilities or plugins, otherwise you'll have to search here on the forums for the link, but someone made a Zoom mode, and you just add his couple lines into config or something. I don't remember the exact install process, but the mode works very well for 4:3 TVs. I'm surprised it or a mode similar to it doesn't come standard in the GBPVR install, actually.

edit: I had to look for it for my fresh install anyway, so here you go. Add the Zoom and the 16:9 +% modes and see what you like. http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...oom&page=3
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

i use version 3.0 of revens xmltv
i have not had issues since i started using it

yeah tv 4 i would say its your frequency as sub mentioned
i get it with tv1 every so often where the sound comes and goes

dvb-s great picture but you need the dish set up good otherwise you get drop outs aswell and a whole new list of issues to make you want to smash the tv and everything around it Smile
you still get the jitters on pan shot so this shows its not the recording causing the problem
its the video card and drivers they suck

none of my complaints are ever really gbpvr
its freckin video cards and drivers that i hate with a passion

everyone goes on about windows been crap but i actually dont mind windows at all ok it should be cheaper but its the video cards that i hate they keep bringing out new ones saying we need them when they never got the last version going right
i have a box of different cards i have tried they are all crap nvidia and ati

thats my rant for day i feel better now Smile

English is funny. What I meant was, I don't use it *only* because its free. I use it because its the best PVR program I've tried, and the support is second to none.

Ah yes. I completely misunderstood that.

Hi Stu,

What can you tell me about 3.0? is it scraped or does he get it from DVB?

I'm interested in buying a DVB-S card. Is there a dummies' guide anywhere that shows how I can use it to get a decent NZ EPG into GBPVR? Will I be able to use it as a recording source when it is not being used to grab an EPG or does it need to be dedicated to that task?

I should clarify that it is the Sky EPG that I'm after, not the freeview. Actually I guess I really would want both!

TIA,
JohnO
