In my never ending HTPC problems - blew up my P4, now blew up my new AMD 3800 mobo, currently working on a slightly crippled HTPC - I have discovered that VLC will mess up your power schemes. To fix this problem do not select disable screen saver in VLC. If you do, VLC will reset your power scheme to something arbitarary - though I have a feeling that it'll set it to whatever scheme you had when VLC was first installed.
Hope it saves someone some headaches on any new installs.
