minumum hardware?

I see lots of posts for "is this HW ok" but none that give the minimum.

So whats the minimum?
in these situations:
a non-server - HW MPEG encoding.
a server - HW MPEG encoding.
a client -


( I was looking at using a client nano-itx or pico-itx but they use CPU's running at quite slow speed, typically 1 - 1.5 GHz)

I used to have minimum hardware specs with the old GBPVR.exe user inteface, but I'm still collecting feedback to determine this for the new PVRX2.exe user inteface.

For standard definition video with PVRX2, I'd guess the minimum at:

- 1.2GHz PIII class CPU
- 512MB ram
- ATI 9250 or nvidia 5700.

Most of the mini/nano-itx boards use the poor performing VIA processors, and are well below what would be required. For example, the 1GHz C3 CPU used in the Via EPIA M10000 is about the equivalent of a PII 450Mhz.

As it is the MPEG decode that hammers the processor - Some of the boards include hardware MPEG decoding, I wonder does this work all the time or only on full screen or TV-Out??

Anyone in the forums using Mini ITX or other small boards?

Those specs have taken hardware acceleration into account, and includes videocards which should have the required level performance.

Some people used to limp by on their mini-itx setups with the old GBPVR.exe user interface, but these are unlikely to work with the new PVRX2.exe user interface.

I'm using a small mini-itx board, but its got a Pentium M 2.0GHz processor in it.

I have just set up a client PC using an intel D201GLY2 ITX motherboard. I am currently using the on board sis mirage 1 graphics and it can run gpvr.exe just about in overlay mode. I reckon with a PCI graphics card which I am about to order it should run PVRX2.exe pretty well in VMR9. I only watch SD TV.

Its totally fanless and cost me very little in cash

Bathman - What speed processessor is on the D201GLY2? I can't find it in the intel spec but it's either 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0 GHz.

Yes. Its my client PC in my bedroom.

The D201GLY is a celeron 220 (1.2 ghz). My sever is a pentium M 1.4 and it runs great I have even recently started transcoding to XVID overnight and it has handled that without any problems.

FWIW My current system (set up on the cheap!)

Compaq EVO SFF Pentium 4 2Ghz
384MB Ram
ATI 9200 in PCI Slot (Motherboard only AGP 4x & low profile so restricted choice of Cards - changed to 9200 because no bios level display using DVI on AGP card)
HVR1300 card so hardware MPEG (not that I use analogue a lot...)

Using PVRX2 - Runs at about 50% CPU on playback with VMR9 custom, but seems OK....

The above is me exactly, except I have a Nvidia 6200.
Works OK, except Live TV is a bit strained. All OK on the MVP.
