an upcoming show is trailed on tv, I like the sound of it so i press a button to capture the screen when the program name is displayed. It sends the resulting file to charachter recognition software, which in turn passes the most likely text to the gbpvr show search.....

Killer feature, simple on paper, but could it really be done????

Sound great, but not something I'd put any time into. I doubt it would be possible.

It would be very handy if possible, but I don't think it could ever be achieved. (yet)
Sky do this, as a reminder, but they know what they are promoting at the time, so "press the green button" knows what to setup to record on .

This works exceedingly well and makes things much more user friendly.

I guess, "one day", with digital TV, data like this could be sent in a datastream and used. I look forward to that day.........

it's just the question if this will be broadcast before or after tv stations will cease to broadcast schedules & go the "pick what you want to see whenever you want it"-way. but i guess it would still be usefull Wink

how does sky do it? i guess it's only working with their own boxes?

sub, one question. do you know it it's common for digital broadcasts (DVB around the world & ATSC) to send the data regarding the currently broadcast show (and other short term shows)? why i ask: at least for european DVB they should broadcast some basic infos within the EIT including such infos flags as: show is currently broadcast / about to begin next. would be nice to have that info used like: if the show started to broadcast, start recording it no matter what the setting for pre-padding is / if the show is still broadcast because it started later or some sport event hasn't ended, keep recording as long as it's still broadcast no matter what the post-padding is...

Very much so - just their boxes. You can only get an EPG from their boxes as well. When they broadcast a trailer for a movie or other program, they often have a green button in the top corner of the screen with "Press green for a reminder". I guess with the Sky+ boxes with built-in recorder it may set it up to record.

They do transmit the now/next info, but in my experience this info doesnt seem to in sync with what is really playing on the screen. It can be a minute or two out. Its just linked to predefined times, much like your GB-PVR EPG.

Would a simple 'search' pop-up, as a video plugin help with this?

So when an advert for a show comes up, you could press 'go' and '1' to give you a searchbox where you can enter the first few letters of the show, which then gives you the 'search guide' box to select the show and schedule a recording? All without you having to stop the current recording?

yes that would be a rather more simple option - especially if it was one of these fashionable 'live' searches that pulls up all the possible options with every letter press.
