Hi

I read somewhere on the internet (like one does!!) that the SPDIF header on the motherboard - I have a gigabyte MB - can connect directly to the amp coax in.

I've wired it up but before I plug it in and try it I wonder if anyone one can confirm as there is not much info out there and very few bits to connect to the header either.

cheers

If you know the pinout you can generally hook it straight to a female RCA plug and use it that way. If you want optical out its more complex.

You can normally buy a SPDIF daughter board for Gigabytes MBs. Not the most common thing in the work, but normally contains a Toslink (Dogital Optical) and RCA (Digital Coax).

Yeah I just mounted an old surface mount RCA socket in a spare backplane I had lying around and connected to my old GB motherboard, soldered the connectors on the socket, and connected to 2 of the pins on MB.

The only diff between optical is it requires the +5V top be connected , and I don't know where to get Toslink connectors from.

Easiest way is to get a fan power plug and use that - then it can be removed nice and easily if you need to work around that area.

Yes - thats exactly what I did. Chassis mount RCA in the expansion back panel. I also added the reset switch and second serial port in it as well.

I had previously tried to get the SPDIF to work but I think I plugged it into the wrong amp wire - I can't quite reach the back without pulling it out!! Hence the confirmation required.

The real gigabyte bit of kit seems to be a bit rare!! - and this way is cheap!

I will let you know if it works.

Yup - it works fine.

However it opens up a whole new set of stuff to sort out.

Basically the sound comes out ok. stereo from winamp, surround from winDVD, (no surround from powerDVD).

When playing the DVD using PVRX2 I get no surround and sometimes a blank menu.

How do I get surround from PVRX2?

The DVD player I have is quite loud - what's the process to transferring this to hard disk - will that end up as part of the video library?

I have some dvd files on the hard disk - home movies - they play in powerDVD but can I have them in PVRX2 as well?

oops I've gone completely off the topic - sorry about that.

What audio decoder are you using?
Try AC3filter, and set it to spdif mode in the config and see if you get sound from the DVD.
Is there still a seperate place in the config to allocate the DVD audio decoder / renderer?
