What audio decoder are you using?
Try AC3filter, and set it to spdif mode in the config and see if you get sound from the DVD.
Is there still a seperate place in the config to allocate the DVD audio decoder / renderer?

Do you mean the decoder in the config of PVRX2? I think it is set to default or Intervideo Audio. I'll check.

I don't remember seeing AC3 in there - would it be the Intervideo one as that is winDVD which seems to work?

I may not have caught on to something here, is AC3filter an extra plugin or something?

AC3Filter is an audio decoder filter used by DirectShow applications like GB-PVR, WMP, etc. Just google for it, download it and install it and then it will show up in your list in the config. I'd find a link for you but it's 5:30 am and I'm about to go to bed

From reading some other posts I get the impression that from an audio point of view ac3filter and ffdshow can do similar things.
That is I could use either to get surround sound from PVRX2.

AC3 filter fixed my DVD audio problems, albeit for only stereo output. It looks very flexible as far as surround and has been completely trouble-free for me as well as for others, IIRC. Given the issues that others have had with ffdshow and my positive AC3 experience, I'd recommend AC3 over ffdshow.

I installed AC3 and it worked well.

I need to play with it and make sure everything I want works but I gave it a quick test and got 5.1 surround out when playing PVRX2 recordings.

I notice it has a time shift to correct out of sync issues - due to the amp processing I think mine is out of sync by a little bit so I should be able to correct for that too.
