What AGP Video Card Do You Use For HDTV?

Well, crap. I just got back from the store with a 4400+, 2gb RAM, PCI/e ATI 2600XT. I've been doing HD on the PC I have in my sig line (see below), and it's been marginal. I was hoping this new setup was going to be the fix.

When you say HD I assume you're meaning 1080p? I would hope that you could do 720p on that rig no problem. If not, I have no hope for my system.

1080p, yea see my tv in my sig line.

it's working very well. The CPU sits around 30% during replay of HDTV while recording a show in SDTV.

The only issue I have at this point is a slight stutter in the video during panning. It could be because the recordings were made on the older DVR system I had, or it could be a real issue still. I don't think at this point I'm CPU bound.

I installed a sapphire 2600XT last night. I tried the latest catalyst drivers from ati and the installer "couldn't find a compatable card"

So I installed the omegadrivers which worked instantly. So I'm going to stick with the omegadrivers for now.
I now have to figure out how to get dxva hardware accelleration working properly. I know its not working because my cpu usage and playback is EXACTLY the same as it was with my old fx5200 128mb card. I'll have more time to test it out tonight and I'll post my results. I think I need to install the wDM drivers and aVIVO pack as well.

What driver versions are all of you using? It seems like people are all over the board with the AGP drivers.

probably cause the omega drivers are to old (just a guess)
i had 2400xt said the same thing i just forced it to use the driver
ATI need to get there shit together

How did you force it to use the ATI drivers? By adding it to the inf file?

cancel the auto install
just selected from list instead of letting it choose (xp pro)

the option that says i will choose a driver or whatever

the problem is they left the 2400xt off the list i didnt know they must have left the 2600xt off aswell
i just install mine as a 2400pro seemed to be ok
but found the card was crap on mpeg files and panning shots so it went back in the box till they get the drivers sorted

Okay, I FINALLY got hardware accelleration working with my 2600xt.
Heres how I did it.
1. Rebooted in safemode, used drivercleaner to uninstall all ati drivers.
2. Rebooted in normal mode and installed the ati catylst HOTFIX drivers (fixed for agp)
3. I then applied the registry tweaks from this website http://exdeus.home.comcast.net/~exdeus/ati-hd2x00/
4. Opened up media player classic. Added these external filters:CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD7.x) with "Set merit:" and the value 00900400
CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD7) and "Prefer".

By step 4 I think that my video card was working correctly with hardware accelleration. But I was still getting really high cpu usage with mkv and x264 files.
1. Open up settings for ffdshow and coreavc and turn off MKV and x264.
2. Make sure that your files are encoded as High Profile @ High 4.1. Change the settings with the utility listed on this forum:

It only takes like 1/2 a second to change the files.

My cpu usage has changed from 98-100% to 7-10% when playing HD files. If you have any questions just let me know.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the codec to work correctly with gbpvr...

I know the title of this thread is AGP cards, but is it fair to say that these (mainly driver) problems do not exist with the 2400 and 2600 PCIE cards?

Yeah. You still might run into some problems with codecs tho.
