I'm using the ffdshow audio decoder & when watching Live Tv I have no problems getting 5.1 audio out. When I play back a recording that I know is recorded in 5.1 I only get 2 channel audio out.

I can play back these same recordings with Media Player Classic & I get 5.1 audio out.

My HTPC is hooked up to my Yamaha receiver via spdif only. Why am I not getting 5.1 audio playback via GBPVR for my recordings? I tried the NVidia audio decoder instead of the ffdshow decoder & got the same results; no 5.1 audio on recordings playback.

What am I missing?

I just checked & I can play back my GBPVR recordings with Windows Media Player & I get 5.1 audio to my receiver also.

Is there a line that needs to be edited (or added) to the config.xml file that will enable my GBPVR recordings to playback the 5.1 audio that they are recorded in?

I've tried every combination that I can think of in the GBPVR config app.

Live TV audio is fine just can't get 5.1 out for playback of my recordings.

Stumped! Anyone?

No, there is no setting in GB-PVR for this. It'll come down to the combination of directshow decoders you're using.

We dont have any 5.1 audio on our channels here in New Zealand, so I'm not the best person to advise you on what to use exactly.

Playback config settings:

Video Decoder: NVIDIA Video Decoder

Audio Decoder: ffdshow Audio Decoder

Audio Renderer: Realtek HD Audio output

ffdshow config: Mixer: Output speakers configuration: 3/2 - 5 channels with LFE checked

Output: Output formats: AC3 bitrate: 448

Connect to: Direct Sound (tried "any filter" also)
"apply only to S/PDIF output" checked

"allow direct to file output" checked

Misc tab: BDA Multiplexer: TS Mux

Audio Renderer: I've tried "default directsound device", "DirectSound: Realtek HD Audio output" all with same results.

What I don't get is that when watching Live TV I get 5.1 audio out but playing back a recording I don't. As far as I understand GBPVR is using the ffdshow audio decoder for both processes so I'm confused as to why it's not working the way I want it too.

No 5.1 channels in New Zealand? That blows! Of course here in Western New York State our local stations were late to catch on & our local NBC affliate is STILL not broadcasting in 5.1 audio! 5.1 audio really makes a difference in any show that has any action to it or any kind of decent soundtrack to it.

If any audiophiles out there have any ideas on how to solve this problem it would be greatly appreciated!

Sub: thank's for your response, you've been quite helpful in the past!
Keep up the good work!

Maybe this will help...

http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...hlight=5.1

I've been wanting to make a wiki page for this for about two years. Maybe it's time...

zehd:

Read thru that post before. I'm trying to figure out if I'm missing something simple or it's just something in GBPVR. I've tried several different combinations of audio decoder & audio renderer settings. Live TV; audio is fine, just can't get the 5.1 on recordings playback.

Tested same recordings with Media Player Classic & Windows Media Player & VLC they play 5.1 fine so the recordings to contain the proper information.

I use the .ts mux. Does this have anything to do with this?

Possibly. When you play a transport stream file, the transport stream source filter is responsible for creating the appropriate video and audio streams. Its possible whatever TS source filter you have installed is doing a bad job.

Try a test recording using the dvr-ms mux instead to see if it gets it right.

I just tried a couple of recordings using the dvr-ms mux. It worked!

TS source filter? Is there a recommended one to use? What is the difference between ts mux & dvr-ms mux? I thought I read somewhere in the past that recording with the ts mux was preferable but i could be wrong.

I have Direct Show Filter Manager installed so I hopefully can provide any info that someone would want to answer any questions regarding filters.

Thank's again!

Great.

The TS Mux and DVR-MS mux are both multiplexer filters used when you're recording. Which one you use dictates the type of file you end up with on disk. TS Mux produces .ts files. DVR-MS mux produces .dvr-ms file.

When you try to play these files on your PC they use different directshow components. When you play a .dvr-ms file, it uses the built Windows directshow components for the media source, and it creates the required media streams. When you play a .ts file, there is no built in GB-PVR or Windows component to act as the source filter, so it looks for a third party component installed on your machine that can handle the job. If found, that component is responsible for setting up the various media streams. In your case, whatever component is taking on that responsibility is getting it wrong and not setting up the media streams correctly.

Its hard to guess what TS source filter you're using, but the most common ones people have installed are HDTV Pump or the Haali Media Spliter.

Its not a recommendation I've made. Most people in the US use the dvr-ms mux. There are some advantages to using the TS Mux, but this is out weighed by the disadvantages (needs third party component for playback, inability to play while still recording, unable to be used for timeshift mode live tv, etc).

These are my settings that give me 5.1 on DVD's if it helps at all.
ffdshow config:
CODEC TAB
AC3=S/PDIF
DTS=S/PDIF
MIXER=SAME AS INPUT
OUTPUT=AC3 640 BITRATE / CONNECT TO ANY FILTER
