Heh, I've ordered items for store pickup at the local Best Buy 3 times. 2 out of the 3 times, they didn't have the order in the back, even after I received the email stating my order was ready for pickup.

So I stand there waiting for the person to go out to the floor and pick up the item. It would have been quicker for me to just buy it in store. Hence the reason I don't shop there anymore.

I remember shopping at BB at one of their first store 20+ years ago - it was actually great. They had a wide selection of stuff (electronic, video and music) and if the person who was helping me couldn't answer my question, they knew someone else working in the store who'd at least have an intelligent answer.

Man, in the last 10-12 years, since they drove even Musicland out of the market, their music & video selection is mainstream poop, their electronics are overpriced, and their employees couldn't even train a monkey to replace them.

It's sad to see a really good company go down hill to think they need to compete.

I think Best Buy is just focusing on the techologically ignorant.
It's apparantly working for them.

I havn't been in that store for a while.

The other day I ventured into Circuit City for a cheap HVR-1600.

I'm fairly certain 90% of the staff wasn't old enough to buy beer.
I had my 18 mo old with me.
He appears to be the perfect sales staff repellent for some reason. Smile

I got in & got out.

By the way, anyone know when, where, how I apply for the digital box voucher?
I see they sell a Magnavox brand at Walmart for about $40 now.

I haven't had that happen yet. I think probably because of the gift card deal... if your order isn't ready in a certain time frame for you to pick it up, they give you a gift card. If/when they can't find my order and tell me to keep waiting, i'll demand the gift card.

I"m so glad we have Fry's here, because BB blows nowdays.

I went in to get a new TV (Samsung 52" LCD) that I saw on a Thursday for $2299. I go in on Sunday and it's $2999. I ask them what the heck, because I'll buy it at $2299 and not $2999 and he says it's not on sale any longer. I say "cool, well CC has it for $2299, if you'll match that, I'll buy here". He says "We aren't matching prices on those sets, because they are discontinued.". OK, now this is really making sense, a TV gets discontinued and a newer model is coming out, so you RAISE the price by $700 and won't price match? Whatever, walked out and got a BETTER Samsung LCD TV at Circuit for $2399. BB really does suck nowdays.

Please consult a magic 8-ball for the answer.

There's a second backup fund for OTA-only if the first fund runs out, which it will once people realize this is actually happening. That's probably the reason for the questioning. And of course it's probably not a good idea to check the "ota only" box if it's not true since government is now watching World of Warcraft players for terrorists (or that's the excuse they use), so I'm sure they might keep an eye on this, too.

I do see news stories about it here and there, but basically every person I know who isn't a part of some kind of internet video/tv site either doesn't know about it or doesn't seem to care, even the ones with analog TVs -- they'll probably care a year from now. Most people I know do only use satellite/cable, though, surprisingly to me since they tend to still say nothing is on.

Now that I think about it, people who know about it but don't have internet access or aren't familiar with the internet probably won't sign up for the coupons, either. People can always use public library computers, but many people still don't use the internet for anything.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

It's been a few months since i went thru the app process, but I think if you say you only have one tv on satellite, and the rest of the tvs use an antenna, you qualify for one voucher. That's what I did.

Realistically, the govt program is designed for Ma and Pa Kettle that have an old TV and can't afford a new one with digital tuners - not for someone with cable/satellite that just wants to do OTA in the bedroom or for the kids TV.

I think I also read that they're that they're really not checking up on the applications because of sheer volume and expense to do so.

Personally, I've bought used direct tv tuners off Craigslist that don't require a satellite subscription and use that for OTA to analog tvs. Here's a link to known direct tv receivers that don't require a subscription for OTA HD http://home.att.net/~roashru/Directv.html
