This is one of those common knowledge things that I just don't believe. I've always been under the assumption that they built a platter container and put different board on the back of it depending on interface is was destined for.
The whole thing is kind of a marketing scam like the daily/weekly/monthly contact lenses. "Sure, these are different then the ones that are cheaper".
And yes, I realize I'm probably wrong and have been told I am by every level of EMC/Xiotech-Seagate/WD/IBM storage group support ( and sales! ).
And without being a complete thread hijack for my storage industry conspiracy theories. This would be a good use of one of those RAID levels that spreads out the writes, like 5. Plus when you wear out the disks, you can have it keep going while you get a replacement. If you have money to throw at it, get a external SAN/NAS cabinet and the service plan includes replacement disks.
