Astounding MPG playback

according to wikipedia : ATI's AVIVO is a technology still under development and as such will be continually upgraded via ATI's Catalyst series of drivers. Compared to NVIDIA PureVideo, AVIVO does not offer any actual decoding software like the PureVideo MPEG-2 decoder. It only allows decoder developers to utilize the DXVA API.

No, I don't think so. But their video cards that support AVIVO generally (always?) come with an MPG decoder too. Unfortunately if it's making use of the AVIVO API, which you would assume it does, I haven't found it to be very satisfactory myself. If I was them, I'd be embarassed that better performance is offered by NVidia's PureVideo decoder on ATI hardware than their own.

avivo is a whole set of technologies...the ati decoder [yes,there is one!] has been in use since way back [every MMC]...part of atidvcr.dll set of filters..

it works great with very low cpu usage and comparable quality to purevideo...the decoder also accelerates h264 and vc1 as well..

i've found that both can have their quirks, and none are perfect..but if you get the stars aligned right, both can be very satisfactory...

yes, yes - i do have those dlls (atidvcr.dll and atixcode.dll) and are installed in ATI Technologies\Multimedia on an older version of the drivers, but not with the Vista ones.

You can regsvr32 them, but I think (if i remember right), selecting an mpg in graphedit and trying to render using the ATI codec won't work...

Isn't ATI's decoder just a re-branded Cyberlink decoder?

In any case, if you have the CPU for it, you can't beat ffdshow with your own avisynth scripts

avivo is a seperate download...doesn't come with the drivers always..
get the 'Parental Control and Avivo Codecs' package farther down the page...
i used it in vista too...[it did show up in config]
was hoping it would act different but wasn't really...evr works great in xp as well...[except dvd playback]
i bet the dvd playback thing has to do with a different dvd navigator in vista..

I suggest the format:

Motherboard brand (ASUS, DELL, ETC.)
Chip set (NVIDIA, ETC.)
chip set driver version
Bios version

Video card
video driver version

audio card
audio driver version

they would need to include the settings for GBPVRX2 - audio decoder, video decoder, audio renderer

Possible problem with the information given - if the audio and or video is set to 'default', what is the actual decoder that is used by the machine?

would be very handy - my limited programming skills would use WMIC for hardware info and sigcheck.exe for software versions (in a batch file....not really suitable)
