Hi! I'm very excited to be here, after spending a couple years capping via Firewire with CapDVHS. Hope I can get this all working, so I don't have to keep manually changing channels on my cable box to record with that software. :-)

I recently got an HDHomeRun to receive clear-QAM from my Comcast digital cable account. Until now I have been using Firewire and the cable box and thereby I am able to cap all the US network channels, plus MOJO and UHD and A&E and Discovery HD Theater. Other channels are visible when I view through the cable box, but are encrypted on the Firewire port of the cable box.

I don't know for certain if Firewire-cappable channels are clear-QAM, but I believe that they would have to be. . . ? Or is clear-QAM orthogonal to whether the Firewire output is encrypted?

I have xmltv set up apparently correctly for my area, and have the network channels and MOJO et al (and only those) enabled. When I map the EPG channels to my cable internal channels using the GB-PVR config application, though, I can only find the network channels, not the channels like MOJO.

I can use the EPG in GB-PVR and can cap the network channels. If I can get MOJO et al working, then I can retire CapDVHS, which I would sure love to do.

So. . . any clues about why I can't map MOJO et al?

Thanks!

I'm fairly sure that is the case - the list of clear-QAM channels does not necessarily equal the list of channels that can be received via firewire.

You should double check with other software compatible with your HDHomeRun though. If you can get these channels in any software with the HDHomeRun, then you should also be able to get them in GB-PVR.

I'll do that, thanks. Presumably if I can tune the channels with the tuner
software that came with the HDHomeRun then GB-PVR ought to work; if not,
then not.

Anticipating the answer that those extra channels are not in clear-QAM, I
assume that I can add Firewire as another input device, and that if I have
an IR blaster I can convince GB-PVR to change the channels on my tuner,
right? Then if channels like MOJO aren't available in my HDHomeRun
GB-PVR will fall back to the Firewire input device? If so this will be fine,
since the main thing I want to gain is to not have to manually change channels
on the cable box.

Is it known whether a Firewire hub will work in this situation, to allow me to
use my single Firewire port on my laptop to connect to two cable boxes?

Yep.

There is no built in support for Firewire devices, but I think another user had written a plugin that does this. I cant vouch for how well it works.

Ah, this thread has info on a program to change channels via Firewire:

I had looked for something like this when I set up CapDVHS but didn't find it.
Much better than an IR blaster. :-)
