I've been having all sorts of aspect ratio problems with gbpvr (maybee cause I'm stuck in the dark ages with an sd tv). When I play a dvd in gbpvr, it stretches the picture to 16:9 format. I have my default playback set to sd, but I don't know how to change dvd playback options.

Try pressing the F7 key until you're in the 'auto' aspect ratio mode. Also make sure you're using a video decoder other than 'system default'.

@sub I have an addition to this thread. I have some dvds with a 16:9 opening video, however, the menus and actual video is 4:3. In GBPVR it does not seem to change the aspect ratio when video streams changes on a DVD. I think it realizes there is a new stream as it does re-initialize the playback surface but, it doesn't run the setSourceAspectRatio tool again, so my video stays stretched to 16:9.

Running GBPVR 1.2.13. I am using Auto for the ratio, using the Media Player Classic MPEG2 decoder for video and ffdshow for the audio

Here is the log snippet from pvrx2.exe-native.log that I think indicates what I am talking about. The dvd is "The Young Indiana Jones Vol.1 Disk 4"

My reading indicates the first video stream is found here:
Code:
2008-06-15 16:12:50.312    VERBOSE    setSourceAspectRatio() using autoAspectRatio
2008-06-15 16:12:50.312    VERBOSE    video resolution is 720 x 540
2008-06-15 16:12:50.312    VERBOSE    source is 16:9
change of video stream @ 2008-06-15 16:12:50.359 VERBOSE Creating video texture: 853x480 where it builds a new video texture. And then again for the Menu 2008-06-15 16:13:09.375 VERBOSE Creating video texture: 720x540. Would it be worth running another setSourceAspectRatio() whenever we build a new texture or before to check we are building the correct ratio?

NOTE: In Media Player Classic I do not have this problem, using the same codecs.

Please see the same logs attached. I hope I have been clear and to the point. I have yet to test if this was a change from 1.2.9 to 1.2.13.

Bump the thread in a couple of weeks (when I'm back in NZ) and I'll take a look.

bump... glad the site is back up.

I have moved back to 1.2.9 for more stable ATSC support and find the same DVD Aspect ratio is there. I noticed it last night watching the dvd of "Return of the Living Dead", the special features are 4:3, but, pvrx2 does not learn this and we end up with a horizontally stretched view. I am sure that other dvds have anamorphic films but 4:3 special features/featurrettes, so I am kindof surprised that other people have not seen this, unless either people a) don't watch dvds, b) don't watch special features, or c) are not anal like me about proper aspect ratio.

Also, apologize for any miss used terms or misunderstanding of how things work, I am not a media expert, just an enthusiast.

I was thinking the same thing! I was watching a behind the scenes doc on stephen spielberg on the Temple of Doom DVD and I was thinking, man, Speilberg has a FAT face! Then i realisied that my aspect ratio was out of whack again (after watching the movie which looked perfect)

So you think that a line of code could be added to check the aspect ratio of each screen and switch accordingly?

From a layman perspective...yes I do believe that this could be resolved with relative ease based upon the logs, however, I do not no the code at all and may be way off base (apologize if this is true, sub). At the beginning of the dvd load it appears that pvrx2 runs setSourceAspectRatio() to get the current ratio

e.g. from my logs above
Code:
2008-06-15 16:12:50.312    VERBOSE    setSourceAspectRatio() using autoAspectRatio
2008-06-15 16:12:50.312    VERBOSE    video resolution is 720 x 540
2008-06-15 16:12:50.312    VERBOSE    source is 16:9

I am not sure what sub can key on to tell when he should rerun the setSourceAspectRatio() function, but, I do think it is possible.

As a workaround I use the Pillarbox aspect ratio (F7) command and it makes it close to a 4:3 which should make things look better.

Try the attached patch and let me know. It wasnt "a line of code" though.

Yeah, sorry...I may have been a little overzelous. But, big thanks, this appears to resolve the issue.

I tested with the two previously reported DVDs and my copy of "Borne Identity" All of the 4:3 video was properly displayed. I can see in the logs where it sets the correct aspect.

Nice work.

A secondary issue, which I should open another thread on at some point, is that after 4:3 video, returning to a 16:9 menu, the menu does not appear until you navigate up/down once. This is not new, it was in 1.2.9, I am just noticing it now.
