Scart. What is the most common version?

A little research for a project we are starting. What is the most common flavor of scart? It seems like there are at least three different pinouts that are supported + some people are putting ypbpr on the scart connector as well.

Hmmm - Didn't know there were different pinouts - I've always been able to just plug and go...

I guess RGB would be the way to go...

I like the description on the latter:-

The SCART connector was developed by the French, originally for the sole purpose of preventing foreign TV imports, previously the French had legislation that prevented any TV imports unless the set was capable of receiving the old French 819 line monochrome system. This effectively stopped any foreign sets from being imported, but the demise of the 819 line system prevented this from being a valid reason for banning imports, so in order to try and maintain their private market they introduced the SCART socket, and passed legislation that said all TV's sold in France since 1980 must have a SCART socket. This was obviously much less of a deterrent, it was far simpler for TV manufacturers to add a SCART socket than to produce a dual-standard set, and the SCART was actually useful elsewhere with the development of cheap home video recorders.

It has something to do with svideo versus composite versus RGB on the same connector. Apparently it doesn't support that, so different pinouts that supports the functions have evolved. I think there are three main ones. That's what video demystified says as well.

Note 1: Pin 8 provides function switching. Applying 9.5-12V to the pin will cause a compatible TV or VCR to switch to the AV (SCART) input. It may also switch on the equipment from standby. Applying 0V or leaving unconnected will switch back to TV. Some TV's also use this pin to select the aspect ratio. Applying 5-8V to pin 8 will switch to 16:9 mode. This may be used by DVD players to set TV to correct ratio. Connect ground to pin 14 or pin 18.

Seems like we are going to need a configuration screen with a few programmable settings to hit all the combinations.

I've never come across it (in the UK), I've only seen it with separate RCA plugs. That's not to say of course that someone isn't going their own way with SCART.

Most SCART plugs I come across are a real pain - big, poor connections, need "wiggling" every so often.

In OZ, FOXTEL, one of the cable TV providers, specifies a SCART lead to get component out of the STB. (as supplied you only get RCA leads for composite)

So it appears they are trying to cut costs in the units by piggybacking on the scart output connector. That said unless you did the mux internally in the IC, you would still have analog muxes on the circuit board which would add cost too. Really would be a lot better to have this all external, but we will probably have to build some flexibility in the system to allow muxing different signals out on the scart pins.
