Vista vs XP for GB-PVR

I just realized that it is slightly possible that my woes with playback on the 780g chipset may be Vista vs XP related. I haven't gone Vista due to some of my friends experiences with it, specifically with file transfer taking too long. I am very network heavy on my LAN and I cannot afford any issues with this even from my HTPCs.

However, I am curious to see how many people are running their setup on Vista vs XP. Also, I am curious if people have run both and seen any major improvements or disappointments between one or the other when it comes to GB-PVR playback or experience.

I've run GBPVR on Vista for some time with no troubles other than Net Radio which was fixed after registering some files. I have it on a second system also running well. Both have been updated to SP1.
I run a dual boot on 1 with XP and on the other system, with Ubuntu but rarely do I not use Vista.
File transfers are faster with SP1 but I still don't see the speeds that XP has but now that I'm using a faster system, it's not a problem for me.

I've harped on about this before but i have to say Vista has been a great upgrade for me. The EVR renderer gives much a far better quality of playback and has been absolutly stutter free. Yes my system is slower when copying copying files but I cannot tell any difference in speed once the GBPVR interface is running (when compared to XP).

I did find the networking to be a bit of a pain to set up (no allow simple file sharing) but once configured it has run without problems.

I have been unable to install SP1 as there is not enough space on my boot partition to allow me to do so. However I have not had any problesm with crashing etc. I tend to refromat the hard drive and do a clean install of the Os every time GBPVR releases a new version so I put SP1 on then.

I think its been a great update and I would suspect that graphics card driver makers will/are concentrating on development of Vista drivers ahead of XP.

I would say try it if your unhappy you can always go back to XP and you have 30 days to register you copy as well

Which version of Vista are you guys running? Would Home Basic be enough to run GB-PVR with EVR? Like gazoo I'm thinking of upgrading my dedicated GB-PVR client machine but don't wanna spend the $ for one of the 'premium' versions since I won't need (or want) all the eye candy.

I'm running Ultimate on both but Premium is good enough. Personally, I wouldn't use the Basic version if it were given to me. I think MS does a disservice by even offering the Basic version. The few people I know who were running Basic either went back to XP or upgraded. I guess you could make it work for you though.

I second that. Don't bother looking at basic. I would go with at least "Premium". Vista has greatly improved with SP1 as I pretty much knew it would.

I just installed Vista SP1 Home Premium on a new disk drive as a test, but left my other hardware the same. It worked fine for what I do, which is recording from HDHomeRun and streaming it to two MediaMVP boxes for my TVs. And the MPEG decoder included in Vista (Home Premium or above) worked fine for playing back videos on my PC, with relatively low CPU usage.

I saw no problems except for installation, where you have to turn off UAC to install GB-PVR, though it can be re-enabled after the installation. I did not activate Vista, and am now back on XP since I will be building a new PC soon. But having said all that, I always stick with Intel motherboard chipsets due to possible compatibility problems, and don't know about the 780g.

AS EVR can be used with Windows XP, I still don't see the advantage of changing to Vista, especially if mainly for GBPVR use.
Although hardware acceleration does not work using EVR in XP (only because the decoders like Purevideo have not been updated to do so), if you have a half decent CPU you still get perfect results...

I think using Vista really has a huge advantage over XP. With all the new media formats and the things involved in setting up the o/s, renderer, drivers and Direct Show codecs filters and splitter I find installing XP harder to install then I ever needed for MythTV. Getting most of this out of the box is really nice especially for in-experienced users.

I think I might give Vista a try on my new server upgrade (old server can't do some HD real well). Now I need to get a demo disk just to try it..
