I've noticed a few others saying something similar with a range of video cards, but no one seemed to have a solution.

Anyway don't want to derail the thread further but bringing it back on subject - I've also got the issue with the scrolling tickers despite trying every combo of codecs I've come across. It's not bad (ie not the quartz issue) but it's definitely more like 90% of perfection rather than 100%.

Always thought it was something we have to live with as the signal goes through so many steps in the PC before finally hitting the screen.

Hope I'm not disrupting the thread but I am noticing some de-interlacing errors.

I think it was best described as "combing" (nothing to do with spinning wool Smile). Where horizontally moving objects across the screen seperate into horizintal lines.

What are the things to try to fix this - I'm just using a cyberlink mux and intervideo decoders.

cheers
Keith

change from weave to bob or put it on auto under video decoder settings in config
also make sure you have wait for vertical sync forced on

A reminder for people switching deinterlacing methods that it should have a night and day difference on a stock ticker. If you switch from Weave to Bob and the ticker doesn't look way better, then that setting isn't doing anything for some reason.

I think MPV was the only video decoder that let me change deinterlacing through my ATI card control panel. The other video decoders generally worked except I had to change the setting with the video decoder itself (which is what most people are probably doing anyway). One or two decoders I tried I don't think changing the deinterlacing affected anything. They had a mind of their own.

If a stock ticker doesn't look solid with Bob, then it ain't workin' right. Bob is a cheap-but-good deinterlace method. It throws away resolution in exchange for solidness.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

Having spent a long time and almost pulling my hair out figuring out the deinterlacing stuff when I first started using GB-PVR... here's what I can suggest from what I learned:

Use VMR9 FSE. Especially if your system is a bit on the flaky side, this will help. Also, many video cards do not support hardware acceleration with EVR, so use VMR9 until you get it right.. only then try out EVR.

Don't underestimate DScaler's MPEG2 decoder! It's a software decoder that gives a nice sharp picture, and it lets the hardware do the deinterlacing, so CPU load isn't that high.

Hardware deinterlacing is great. A simple Bob in software is ok, but as stated above, you sacrifice resolution. Hardware deinterlacing will give you a "smart bobber" that will analyze each group of pixels and decide what needs to be done, leaving stationary parts sharp and solid, and giving crisp and clear movement (important for tickers especially).

Cyberlink is also a great decoder, and supports hardware acceleration. It probably came with any DVD software you have. If you don't have it, DScaler is still wonderful.

If you want, you can try using ffdshow to handle MPEG2 video as your decoder, and in the Output settings you can tick "set interface flag"--this will enable hardware deinterlacing by sending the interlace information to the renderer (VMR9) which will then trigger your hardware to deinterlace (this is just like DScaler does it). The advantage with ffdshow is you can turn on options like warped resize (great to resize 4:3 material to a 16:9 display for keeping proper aspect ratio in the center of the screen), noise reduction, and anything else you can think of. It will take some extra CPU beef, though.

Bottom line.. if you're having ticker problems, or annoying 'combing' effects, load up DScaler and it'll probably be fine. You can change the output colorspace in DScaler's configuration.. try NV12 if the default doesn't work so great.
