GBPVR install on WINE/Ubuntu Gutsy

As I only really use gbpvr for psyciks MusicLibrary 2 and wanted to basically get rid of XP for day to day work, I have been experimenting with running gbpvr in a virtualbox install of XP, hosted on ubuntu 8.04.

intial tests results are as follows

Config app works perfectly, but pvrx2 wont run using VRM9 but attempts to run using overlay, the older gbpvr interface works fine using overlay.

subs music library plays fine, but Musiclibrary2 cant find any files when you scan the library, I have tried a disk mapping to create a drive letter, and a unc path but in either case the library scanning finds no files, any suggestions gratefully received.

windows Media player finds and plays the tracks without problem.

Anybody else tried this sort of set up ?

I for one would love to see GB-PVR ported to Linux. I don't use Windows except on my PVRs. MythTV for Linux SUCKS balls. And Windows isn't as stable or effecient or secure as Linux. But I can't complain about GB, seeing as how it works great and it's free.

It would be really cool to see GB-PVR on Linux (like Ubuntu). I think there are quite a few advantages that could serve GB better...

VirtualBox is good but it (and vmware) will never support VMR or EVR which pretty much rules out PVRX2.

I'd disagree with the MythTV characterisation - it can be a pain to setup and I really dislike the frontend to it (that part sucks balls). But the backend and web interface are *really* good. Typical linux, great server, lousy interface.

I've been slowly learning C/C++ & have the idea that a live distro based on E17 would be an ideal environment for creating a Live GBPVR linux client.

But, that's a while off.
fortunatly, I don't think GBPVR is going anywhere so I don't feel pressed to rush myself.

There will be an mvpmc emulation mode client for linux one day too but I'm not sure it will necessarily run on a live distro since my piece will depend on the availability of DirectFB and mplayer on the the distro.

but, without XVMC acceleration for Nvidia you need a lot of CPU for HD.

One question, is it possible to create menu items for local media with MVPMC if it's using Haupauge's VNC based protocol?

Depends on your definition of VESA and focus. I only care about supporting standard TV resolutions 480/576/720/1080 i/p

No matter what platform HD requires horsepower. Some people think that linux offers a magic bullet but it doesn't. That is why I like embedded devices.

There's two things in play here mvpmc can do what any linux app can do subject to the hardware so the possibilities are endless The Hauppauge VNC stuff is just one specific app (we know are calling mvpmc plugins) which I named emulation mode and it does require a server. I guess you could write a minimal python server on the client that would did let emulation mode run but I consider that a waste of time.

Meh - from what I'm seeing on the MythTV list often XvMC is more trouble than its worth. The Dual Core AMD 4000+ CPU's are more than capable of playing back full HD.

Personally I'm hoping the recent documentation and source code opening up by VIA, AMD, Intel and Nvidia will bear fruit. I'd love to see onboard H.264 acceleration and HDCP support.

If you want to run linux - then run a linux PVR - Its like saying

"Does anyone know if you can install Server 2008 and Exchange 2007 in a VM on Linux?"

Or

Can a Mini Cooper S have a Coupling attached to the back to tow Trailers for a logging company while my Kenworth is in the shop?

Even if it can be done - Its not a good idea!
