Hauppauge 500 on new install - sound but no video

Hi.

I just converted over from MS MCE using a Adaptec 3610 which worked very nicely, it was just very limited... and since it relied on XP MCE which is nearing end of life I figured I should work on my replacement PVR.

So, looking up "MCE Hacks" I found this place. And grabbed another spare piece of hardware and installed XP Professional (also near end of life, but at least the PVR software wouldn't be) and GB PVR. And the drivers for my Hauppauge 500.

I ran through all the steps in the Quickstart and it seemed to work well (outside of one strange behavior in the Capture Sources page where although I picked "Analog Recording Plugin", it displays "Direct Recording Plugin". When I go back into it, it shows Analog again. Maybe thats a known bug. Not really what I came in here for but I thought I'd mention it.)

So with everything set up and working, I can then go into Live TV and see all my stations and hear them just fine but I get a completely black/blank display. I can see the bar at the bottom with the channel and the description but thats it. As expected, when I record a show it shows as black/blank but with sound. The other things I've tried such as Net Radio work fine too.

I'm going to attempt to attach my logs.

Any advice would be happily received.

If you can hear it but get no video then its probably just a matter of not having an MPEG2 decoder installed. If you check the playback tab of the config app and 'system default' is the only option listed, then this is a good sign you dont have any MPEG2 decoders installed.

I did have "system default" as an option but I already had selected "MPEG Video Decoder".

I didn't know if that was essentially the same thing so thought I'd give your idea a try using the same one I used on the MS MCE when I built it. So I downloaded DeScaler5 MPEG Decoder and configured the system to use it.

Same result. Sound and no video.

Using the "AMCAP" tool on the Hauppauge driver disk, I can see the video. So I would assume its not anything with the OS or hardware.

Try installing this decoder: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MPV_Decoder.htm

Then select it in the config app, then reproduce the problem and zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look.

That was the trick!

Now I can start fiddling with all the settings and plug-ins. Thanks so much for the speedy help.
