Cool, no offense meant.. I just read a few different tickets in which you continually seemed to have the statement that you would "never add VLC function into the product"

sub Wrote:Sorry, but I wont be building any functionality that requires the use of VLC.

etc. I'm for the use of the product myself though it's got a few bugs to work out, who doesn't? chuckle... NE ways, kinda agree on that ticket...

Well, I'm going to see if I can find a way to run a commandline start of ISO movies in VLC and then use them from GB-PVR per the suggestion previously made.

I'm pretty sure that sub's reasons for not adding functionality that would require VLC are:

1) K.I.S.S. principal. No more requirements for GBPVR than absolutely necessary.
2) It would take GBPVR in a new direction. GBPVR is a DirectShow app, VLC is not.

My opting to not use VLC isnt about not liking it, but rather that its not written in a way that GB-PVR can easily use its features (its not directshow based etc). There a lot of other options doing things that are a much better fit with GB-PVR.

Using DVD playback as an example. If GB-PVR was to try using VLC to play DVDs, pretty much the only thing I could do is run the command line player then loose control. Instead I prefer to do Directshow based playback, which enables me to do playback entirely within GB-PVR. This allows the app to do stuff like use the same keys as the rest of the app, show the same type of OSD graphics, ability to switch DVD playback into a window on main menu so you can schedule recordings etc.

Also, I like to keep dependencies on external apps to minimum since it complicates the list of things users need to install.

At the end of the day I just cant see anything from VLC that GB-PVR really needs.

I'm still not sure that your not complicating the whole thing with VLC.

1) Rip DVDs to ISO with the DVDripper plugin. (or directly with DVDdecrypter - the plugin is just a GBPVR frontend for this program)
2) Install Deamon tools and set up the path correctly in GBPVR config
3) Navigate to the ISO in the GBPVR video library and hit play.

I love VLC too but in this case it just seems to be unnecessary!

BTW the webadmin draws on VLC heavily for streaming all your programs over the network so it is kind of integrated into GBPVR already. When it's needed it's used, when it's not it's not Smile

A good point. and understood. I will give the daemon tools a try and see how it works out.

What I do, and this is another option that saves even the (uncomplicated) messing with daemon tools is to go to your Video Library folder, create a folder for your DVD. Then use DVDshrink to rip the DVD into that folder where it creates a AUDIO_TS and a VIDEO_TS folders.

GBPVR will fire up the DVD from those folders and do the menus etc as it would normally from a DVD, and you're away!

DVDshrink will even let you get rid of the crud you don't want to store such as foreign language/subtitles, and you can shrink the DVD down to less than half its size, usually with no noticable loss in quality.
