no sound when playing back recordings

I just downloaded gbpvr 1.2.13 and made my first recordings last night. When I play them I hear no sound. Originally I had a problem with no sound on live TV but found that I needed to select the onboard audio card in my windows settings for default audio. I am sure that there is something that I am missing but cant figure it out. Is there no sound because the recording did not include audio somehow? Is there no sound because the playback settings are wrong?

Yes, its most likely related to the audio decoder or audio renderer you're using. Try setting the audio renderer to 'system default', then try other audio decoder options.

I went back and set the audio renderer to default and tried all the decoder options and still no sound...other ideas?

What audio decoders did you try exactly?

Also, what sort of recordings are these? ie analog (with MPEG1 Layer2 audio) or digital (with AC3 audio)

Realtek HD Audio output
CyberLink Audio Renderer (PDVD7)
ATI HD Audio rear output
Default DirectSound Device
Default WaveOut Device
DirectSound ATI HD Audio rear output
DirectSound Realtek HD Audio output

I have an ATI graphics card and an ATI tuner card
Realtek is the integrated audio device on the motherboard I think

Those are the audio renderers. As I mentioned above, leave that set to 'system default'. I was suggestioning trying other audio *decoders*.

Sorry my mistake. Tried the decoders too. There are only two of those the Cyberlink and the MPEG. And these are analog recordings.

If it doesnt help, then post the pvrx2.exe.log and pvrx2.exe-native.log (with the MPA selected as as the audio decoder) and I'll take a look.

Sometimes it's very frustrating trying to figure out a problem like this. I'll give you a troubleshooting method that will let you peek inside Windows audio/video processing.

Option 1 - Try playing it with another player. Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, VLC and Nero Showtime all should be able to play it. If they produce sound, it has audio. These programs may use their own internal preferences as to how they decode and play the file. I'm most familiar with MPC, and it has ways to tell what is being used to play the file.

Option 2 - This is more fun. Try downloading Graphedit. Then select Render file on the File menu. It should produce a graph of the default splitter used by Windows to separate the aud/vid and then the filters used for decoding and then rendering the split elements. If you see the splitter and audio filters, then the file at least has some component that Windows thinks is audio. You can then try to play it inside Graphedit using the defaults, but if they don't work, you can try other decoders/renderers until you find what does work.
