I've just finished setting up my MediaPC with MediaPortal - i've used MP for ages but never had it 100% setup as i could never get my TV Card working how i wanted too (Damn DVB-C!)

Anyway while looking for fixes for my TV Card i stumbled on to this site and i must admit im quite tempted by what you have to offer.

Id like to get an idea from the users what advantages GBPvr has over MP as if i was to make the switch i need to do it before the wife gets used to MP Big Grin shes already had a go at me for forcing her to use a keyboard to change TV Channels!

For me the two main things that GBPVR has over MediaPortal are stability and support.

Not to take away from from what they have done over at MediaPortal but the support her is excellent and the product is way more stable. Given that my wife just want's something that works, this was the obvious choice to make.

Arrr you said the two things that i really need Big Grin it has to be wife friendly at the end of the day.

Feature wise what does it hold over MP? i mean i love the TVSeries Plugin and also the TV GUI (Now its working)

I guess with a more active support more plugin devs will work on this??

Also im i right in thinking that it support MDAPI properly? no need for bodging it in like on MP?

I found GBPVR by accident after I'd bought my first tv tuner card. I've gone from being a noob to having three tuners, a vast music and game collection and more all front-ended by GBPVR.
Meanwhile I have absolutely no idea what MediaPortal is. Through my entire learning experience I have never found anything wanting from GBPVR in terms of stability, functionality or support.

to put it simply gbpvr just works, thats it main advantage over anything.

I started out looking for a way to play lots of music and found the jukebox plugin [which has really been superceded by musiclibrary2 by the way], since then I have bought two tuners and a mvp unit.

the support is outstanding and the friendlyness of the forums is second to none

try it out, you wont look back

MVP? I will take a look at the musiclibrary2 plugin as that is one area that i think MP is crap at.

What other plugins should i look at - as they do tend to be the things that really push these kinda apps.

if you've got freeview tuners the DVBT Radio plugin. Otherwise I'll second Music Library 2 and also Gamezone if you play many games or use emulators.

All the plugins are easy to install and then enable/disable from the config menu so it's easy to try a few out to see what works for you. Note though that GBPVR underwent a major change a while back so start with the plugins listed as compatible with the latest version only (some of the older plugins can be made to work but best to approach this as a separate stage).

The community skin is very popular as it gives you full control over all skin items from within the GBPVR menu.

Finally, built into the core app already is the enhanced web admin (EWA) which allows you to schedule recordings and stream music and video over the web (or a local network as an alternative to a client setup).

Little (nay, tiny) box connecting TV and ethernet that brings gbpvr to each TV in the household at the fraction of the cost and horsepower of a client PC.
For HD and other clever stuff is the PCH http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/ both these devices are well integrated and supported in gbpvr.

ok so its a month or two on and im now back and currently about to put GBPVR on my MediaPC.

The main reason for this is down to the MVP support, as it seems to be the simplest way to add extra front ends to a Media Network.

Although i have since grown fond of MediaPortal once again it does not seem ideal for multiple frontends.

I have two DVB-C cards and have 2 main Front ends one being the MediaPC itself and the other being the bedroom TV which if i GBPVR take a shine to will be done via MVP.

I also like the ability to stream to PCs on the network and i assume there is support for this? Not that i've looked into it as of yet mind you.

Fingers crossed it works and the wife likes it!
