Could someone give me some pointers, or a nice step by step in backing up my install (whole system XP,and all programs), i think i want to create a disk image, so all i have to do is burn the dvd, then copy it onto the HDD if i ever want to format and reinstall

Thanks

My favourite and always been reliable for me is Acronis TrueImage. AFAIR there is a comprehensive user guide in the trial download. http://www.acronis.com/

It has a trial download at http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/dow...trueimage/

I second Acronis TI. I liked it so much, I paid for it...

If you have a seagate or maxtor drive I believe that you can download a free OEM version of Acronis.

i used v2i protector in the past, but it failed to restore on different drive sizes then the original backup & was a PITA to install (like every other imager i've tried so far)

what i use now: http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/down.htm
it has a 30 day free trail (after that you can still restore your backups, only new backups are disabled) & what's even better: it's only one exe, no installer needed, just grab the exe from the homepage & use it. btw: it's fast (backup & restore) & never failed me till now

I have been using this one for many years to make routine images every night. The tool does allow to make differential snapshots, which reduces the total storage needs. This has proved usefull for me to keep different configurations of a machine.

I do it by booting a Linux live CD and then using dd.
