transcode HD DVB-T recordings

I am wanting a way to transcode to AVI or WMV some of my NZ HD recordings, I recorded a movie on TV3 which was 12GB, although I plan to replace my HD with a larger one, I would still like to be able to archive some recordings to a smaller file. transcoding within GB-PVR doesn't work and I haven't found any other software that will help either. Any help would be appreciated.

Well I downloaded all possible video editing tools and I have found nothing that actually works....:mad: Then I tried [SIZE="1"]vista moviemaker :confused: [/SIZE] and am sorry to report that it did work, almost when my video driver did not crash.... and I made the edit cuts at a complete frame.... and tilted my head 15 degrees to the right..... But the resulting 5 minute WMV file actually played back on a standard Vista system with no H264 but in 720p HD.

On a more positive note some applications are extremenly small http://www.ffprojects.net/tssplitter/tssplitter.htm is 44kb so it cannot be hard to build something just need to find and read the f.... manual....

Sorry, but GB-PVR's transcoder users ffmpeg, which doesnt understand the HE-AAC audio format used on our Freeview HD system, so is unable to transcode these recordings.

I'm not aware of any software that can transcode these recordings. I'm sure other software will be updated to work with this new audio format, its just a matter of time.

To be even more precise:
GBPVR currently cannot transcode the .TS files it generates whilst recording NZ Freeview HD

The issue is the HE-AAC audio format used on New Zealand Freeview HD broadcasts. Satellite-broadcast Freeview in NZ is not HD and doesn't use
the HE-AAC audio format, so doesn't have the same issue.

Along these same lines when I change the extension of a .TS recording to .MPG (for testing ) it disappears from the recordings screen & has to be played through the video library. I have found .TS from DVB-S seems to record heaps better on my system I have been thinking of transcoding the recordings over night to .MPG so I can play them on the MVP's as I hate transcode on the fly, but this in no good if they disappear from the recordings menu. Has anyone else tried this?

Yep, what Deev8 said is correct. GB-PVR can transcode the Freeview recordings from satellite. It cant transcode the Freeview HD recordings from DVB-T, since these use a new uncommon audio standard not used elsewhere in the world (except Norway).

Obviously the lack of functionality in transcoding these files is beyond your control, but do you think this is likely to be addressed by anyone soon ?

I posted a bad solution for transcoding here that I have been using to test the PCH.

but you might be able to play with the pcm stream and maybe make an mkv file.

I guy named Paul Kendall has made some patches for ffmpeg too

But regardless, I think everyone should be thinking in terabytes now.

It depends how you use things. A lot of people have a lot more hard drive space than me, but I never really have to many problems with disk space. A lot of shows you record you know you're only going to watch once, so I watch and delete those. Other shows I setup season recordings that keep the last half dozen or so episodes, and it automatically deletes the older ones.

I'm sure ffmpeg and other utilities will be updated in the near future to cope with this type of audio stream.

Personally I'm not that interested in transcoding. Transcoding equals reduced quality. The H.264/HE-AAC used by our Freeview HD system is about the most effecient codecs available (more effecient that xvid etc), so you're not going to
be able to transcode to a smaller file size without signficant reduction in quality. I'd prefer to just keep the files in their original format.
