.ts file (clear QAM/HD) good audio sync... no ff/skip

Well, I have traded one issue for another. I switched to "TS Mux" to get the raw .ts files out of my hauppaugh hvr1600 with the latest gbpvr. That worked great - now I have beautiful HD captures in perfect sync.

Bad news is, you can't effectively navigate them in pvrx2. As long as you just play/pause, its all good. 30 second and 1 minutes skips freeze, take forever, or just don't work.

Am I missing something else? Should I be transcoding the .ts file after recording? What would be a good way to do that?

For the most part navigation in .ts files works pretty well for me. Skipping can be a couple of seconds though.

If I had a bit more time available I'd offer to download a video file from you, so that I could try them here, but I'm a bit busy with work at the moment.

"Skipping can be a couple of seconds" sounds about right. Possibly worse with larger files.

It's not usable for the wife, so it fails the usability test. Am looking into transcoding to mp4...

Hey sub, if you ever do decide to take a look at this, I can generate some massive HD .ts streams for you. I get the busy at work thing for sure.

Just as an aside, this app: http://www.avidemux.org/ was the only thing I found that could deal with the TS files without difficulty *on* the windows box. It "indexes" the .ts file in about 2 minutes (for a 60 minute program) and then can seek/play anywhere very fast. Whatever he's doing if you did that we'd be golden In the meantime I am seeing what a 2 hour transcode to mp4 resized to my 720p (it's a 1080i program) looks like/plays like.

As an aside... how do I tell gbpvr the name of the file has changed (from .ts to .mp4) in the database, assuming I script this whole process...

You might want to pass a ts file through one of these utilities to see if it fixes something broken in the stream itself.

Yep... right now the ts4np thing is crashing and the tsdoctor won't open the .ts file... I take it it's locked by the transcode.

The transcode is looking appealing just for the reduction in file size, if it works. MP4 vs MP2 is a lot more compact. A lot more. Way way more.

If you upload a small 100 MB sample to a free upload site like megaupload I will ask if the author of TSDoctor can have a look. It won't help with the filesize but it might provide better source to transcode into h264 for a mkv file, which is a better way into the future.

TSDoctor is able to open/process the .ts file if no other app has it open, so that's ok. However, it borkes the file when cleaning... the file begins at a commercial (2.0 audio) and then when the program starts it flips to 5.1... TS Doctor seems to lock it in 2.0 mode in the converted file? Anyway, interesting. Still searching for the best transcode...

Ok, followup myself again.

TSDoctor file above does play well in pvrx2, and cleanly (quickly!) ff/rev/skips, so the cleanup above really helped. Can you tell that guy to make a command-line aware version? There is no way to run the tool without a gui/as part of post-processing.

I also ran it through a couple other tools that seemed to make it happier too, now I've lost track (did too many tests/didn't take notes ... bad me.)

Transcribing is way more work then its worth for "throw away" recordings, so for now passing on that idea.

Hmmm... looks like its possible to use avidemux on the command line to just do a passthru cleanup fairly quickly (ie, about 10 minutes for an hour program...) Will update in a moment if it does work

Edit - nope, blows sync badly (but does do ff/rev correctly :0)

So, we need a nice command-line version of one of these tools. The other tool that worked but also doesn't do command line was HDTV2MPeg2 - that one cuts commercials to boot. Also lacks command line version. GRRR.
